This walk of about 1 hour is a very pleasant one around Ugley Green.
First you need to drive to Linnets Wood and park there. Drive from Elsenham Station up New Road, under the motorway, through the wiggles at Ugley Green and past the derestricted sign. Follow the sign right toward Ugley and on through a left-hand and a right-hand bend. At the next left-hand bend, with great care pull in to the parking area on the right. (If you reach the main road, you have gone too far.)
Walk through the gate marked Woodland Trust and continue straight on the wide footpath.
Follow the yellow-on-green Woodland Trust Waymarked Walk, past the bench and bear left then right, then straight ahead, then round a right-hand bend and along a broad straight path.
At the waymark pointing right, bear right (do not go past the plaque from the Fawcett family) and then pass through the kissing gate to the road and turn left.
After a cluster of houses take the path to the left and keep left beside the cottage garden. 20 metres beyond the end of the garden, turn left into the wood, clambering over two fallen tree trunks.
Turn right to follow the path parallel to the edge of the wood, with a right turn after 50 metres to emerge at the corner of the wood at the standard waymark. (It is possible to stay in the field to the corner to avoid going into the wood. But if you do so, take care not to walk on growing crops.)
Follow the path with a hedge on your left and an open field on your right.
At the end of the field go past the ditch and turn right, and continue with the well-fenced paddock on your left, round a left-hand bend and past the metal gates.
Continue straight on when the fence bears round to the left, through a potentially squelchy patch between two fine houses.
As soon as you emerge on Ugley Green, turn right, leaving a pond and a bench on your right.
Cross the road and continue down Dellows Lane for about 200 metres.
As you come out of the right-hand bend go left through the gateway of Lavender Cottage (there is a fingerpost on the right of the road, hidden in the hedge beyond the telegraph pole), and then keep straight ahead on the grassy track and continue beside an open field.
When you reach Alsa Wood ahead of you, turn right following the footpath beside the wood (you can walk in the wood if the path is too overgrown).
At the crossing of footpaths, continue straight on, following a clearly defined path to Snakes Lane.
Go straight across and follow the public bridleway in a straight line downhill until it reaches the main road.
Now turn right and follow the footpath along the road and turn right at Pound Lane, signposted to Elsenham. A short walk now brings you back to your car.
