January 2022

Dear All,

Bernard has compiled the following very interesting article for our Bee Fly project which I am forwarding as an ‘extra’ as it contains a variety of subject matter and some lovely photos, - so, thank you Bernard!

Regards

Mike Hillman

I just thought I should let people know I have been out and about a bit but mostly working on different projects.

I work with the Surrey Heath Tree Wardens and while in Warren Wood last Saturday, we set up a Stag Beetle home. The wild daffodils were just showing some growth.

At Windlesham Field of Remembrance we meet to work out how to prevent the removal of frog spawn from the pond. Last year most of the frog spawn was taken by by well meaning people who did not realise how much was disappearing.  We will be doing some planting and have produced a poster explaining the problem.

On Thursday I was up to my thighs in icy water at Tice’s Meadow, in my nice new waders.  The picture is of the human-chain  waiting for the nesting boxes from the sand martin nesting bank, I was the one carrying them from the site in the lake. The nesting bank is a shed on stilts in the lake. Unfortunately the water level has been so high at times, that the lower two banks of nesting boxes have been flooded, now they are building a new “shed” on dryer part of the reserve.

I am hoping we can get into the bat hibernaculum in Tice’s Meadow this Saturday, this is one of three sites which we are now allowed into while complying with Covid restrictions. One other is Mother Ludlum’s Cave which had six Natterer’s bats two weeks ago, I’ll report back after the visit.

Thanks for the pictures I have received so far, please send in something even a couple if you have not been photographing much.

The photo form went out with the “Outings” as a category  when I had meant to delete it so please ignore that.

We had these two foxes in the garden at 10.30 on Friday Morning, they had arrived as a trio but one continued on its way.

I think they were last year’s cubs.

Keep warm
