Andrew Russell was a Bucks Under 14 Team player who was killed when two trains collided in the 1981-82 chess season. An annual competition between Bucks and Berks juniors was held for some years in his memory. This tophy disappeared for several years and re-appeared last season. Bucks and Berks decided to re-start these annual matches, at Davenies School in Beaconsfield on 22nd January 2017.
The match consisted of an Under 9 match and an Under 11 match - 15 boards per team. The scores were combined to produce an overall winner.
Bucks managed to win both the Under 9 and the Under 11 match, to run out winners by the score of 37 points to 23.
Well done to everyone - we don't often win a match against Berkshire - but it shows that Bucks junior chess is growing in strength and depth.
