'BRIDGING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE'
The West of England Rural Network and the Avon Local Councils' Association are developing an initiative 'to help people engage online' by learning basic IT skills to enhance access to shopping and services, medical support, and social contacts with friends and family. The programme, which will run from January to June 2022, may include:
  • ‘Tea and tech’ computer familiarisation in a friendly and relaxing setting;
  • ‘Zoom booths’ in community buildings where people can use technology in  a safe setting – because they don’t have the technology or the space at home;
  • Simple improvements such as better WIFI connection or audio visual equipment to enable more people to get engaged (funds are limited).

So far the focus has mainly been on older people but the organisers see the programme as relevant also to younger people including those seeking employment. The organisers aim to do most of the organisation centrally, including technical support. They are looking for enthusiastic support at community level: a suitable venue, some volunteer support and especially help to get people to come along.

If you are interested in taking part, please contact dick@wern.org.uk

BLAGDON LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

After a successful year communicating via Zoom we are really keeping everything crossed that we will meet in person in Court Lodge in March. Although we have attracted many participants, and some new members with our zoom programme, the social aspects and personal interactions are lost. So our 2022-2023 programme will be launched at our AGM Plus meeting on Wednesday 9th February. These meetings are not as dry as you might imagine – the formal AGM is quite short, and is always followed by a really interesting presentation. This year we will have an input from a member of YCCCART (Yatton, Congresbury, Claverham and Cleeve Archaeology Research Team) who will talk about the team's work, including some surveying they have been doing in Blagdon using their sophisticated equipment.

Society members should join the Zoom at 7pm, while all other visitors are welcome at 7.30pm. Mike Adams will send out the link in due course. If you are not on his list please email him m.adams.blagdonhistory@gmail.com

We will be delighted to welcome old and new members.

Advance notice for March 9th: Ken Parsons will present ' Throwing light on the Dark Ages in Somerset'. What was life really like in places like Blagdon?
