What sort of songs do you enjoy singing? I like singing a range of songs – from folk songs, to shanties, rock and roll and ballads to tracks from musical theatre. |
Have you been in a choir before? The last time I was a member of a choir was when I was at college. |
Do you know what voice part you are? Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Alto, Contralto? [It doesn’t matter if you don’t know – we can place you where you feel most comfortable] I was a soprano but am now more of an alto / contralto |
Can you read music? [This is not a requirement of the choir, so don’t worry if you can’t] Yes, I can read music |
Do you have a musical background at all? Do you play any instruments? Belong to any musical theatre groups etc? I started playing the piano when I was 5 and throughout my youth learnt to play the recorder (!), guitar, clarinet, violin and viola. I started accompanying musical theatre groups in 1990 and since then have accompanied and led various pantomime groups, and musical theatre groups. I have been involved in choirs since 2014 when I took on the role of accompanist to the Chelmsford Male Voice Choir, a role I very much enjoy. I now lead Great Waltham Village Choir, Braintree Make Voice Choir and am MD for OffSpringers theatre group and The Players Theatre Group. I also play in a swing band – slowly learning jazz chords

Anything else you wish to share? I enjoy leading Braintree Voices as there is a lack of choirs just for women in the area. It will be different to the mass community groups such as Buskerteers, Rock Choir etc as we will be using sheet music and accompanied by a piano / keyboard. I enjoy accompanying as I feel that the choir can really get to understand what they are singing and can put emotion into the performances. Once the choir is up and running with a start of a repertoire, then I hope we can perform to the public – maybe some joint concerts, or just Braintree Voices with soloists – vocal or instrumental.
