What sort of songs do you sing?
A mixture! We are always open to suggestions from members
Do I have to audition?
No!
I've never really sung before.....??
That's ok! There is safety in numbers and you will be fine. Singing in a group is incredibly uplifting and the beauty of it is, that you don't have to be a brilliant singer to do it. Your voice won't get any better unless you use it. The more you sing, the better you get! Use it or lose it! Give it a try!
But I can't sing.
That is unlikely! I will get you singing. We will have some simple exercises at the start of rehearsals to support the voice and prepare you for singing. Confidence also helps - which will come with time! If you don't start singing, you won't get any better!
Will I have the opportunity to sing a solo?
We don't usually have soloists, although you are welcome to ask!
I can’t read music – does it matter?
No. I teach the songs by ear so you will pick up your part through repetition. I will also teach some of the ‘mechanics’ of music.
Is Braintree Voices just for women?
Yes. There are opportunities for men to sing in Braintree by joining the Braintree Male Voice Choir, so Braintree Voices is for female voices only.
Can children sing in the choir?
This is an adult choir, 18+. However - I will consider teenagers if they are particularly keen and are accompanied by a paying parent / guardian following a discussion with me.
I don't have a babysitter, can I bring my children?
I am really sorry, but no. This is an adult environment and for many is a break from the children and commitments!
How will rehearsals run?
Rehearsals start at 10.00 am and finish at 11.30 am. There will be a break in the middle when you can get a tea or coffee.
Do we learn choreography?
No. Let's focus on the singing!
Are there rehearsals in the school holidays?
Yes – please take note of the rehearsal schedule.
Do I have to perform?
No, you don't have to. If you just want to come along to sing every week that is fine. However, most people enjoy having the opportunity to show friends and family what they have achieved!
What is the cost?
Please see the membership information and fees.
I'm not sure I can commit to coming every week.
That's ok - it is a big ask to come along every week and some people simply can't. If you can't make a rehearsal or 2 (or 3!) but would like to stay in the loop, there are practise tracks available so you can practise at home if you wish!
If you think you will be missing quite a few rehearsals, but still wish to be a member, then I suggest you have a ‘pay as you go’ membership.
However, I do encourage you to attend when you have no decent reason not to. The choir overall benefits from your presence and if you are feeling a bit down or tired, it will give you a boost!
