Passing of Former President (1993-94)
Eric Appleby ("Apse"), (1956 - 61)
It is with great sadness that I have to report the passing of Eric on the 13th July. He had been fighting cancer of the oesophagus for 2 or 3 years, and although he had briefly overcome the illness, sadly it returned some 6 months ago. He was able to get away to Cornwall for a couple of weeks with family but on his return contracted pneumonia and sepsis, passing away at 5.30pm [13th July].
Eric was a tenacious football wing half and a reliable cricket wicket keeper for both the school and Founders teams throughout his time at school. He was a committee member of the FPA for many years and served as President in 1993-94.
On one memorable occasion in the 1980s he somehow managed to assemble the entire under 12 Gazette Cup winning football team of 1957 for a reunion at the Old Boys annual dinner held at The Imperial Hotel that year.
The Gazette photo of the cup winning team; Eric is helping to hold our winning captain aloft by supporting his left knee and calf. Alan is the goalkeeper wearing my school cap to shield my eyes from the late evening sun at Bloomfield Road.
