Baines School Former Pupils' Association

Attending Baines School isn’t just about your years as a pupil or member of staff...... It's about being a member of the Baines family.

The Baines School Former Pupils’ Association, formerly the Old Boys’ Association is open to both former pupils, current and former members of staff of the school. It was founded in 1906 by the Headteacher Thomas Whittington, ‘the father of the school’, and still has its founders’ objectives at its core.

These are:

to promote the interests of Baines School in every possible way;

to help former members of the School to keep in touch with one another

to help develop the current pupils to reach their full potential.

From the moment you attend Baines School you become a member of the Baines Family; but why should it end when you move on to other establishments? You will always be a member of the Baines Alumni but why not join the Former Pupils Association. Both former pupils and current and former staff can be a member of the association.

The current cost of membership is a mere £10 per year.

For many people, leaving school often means the last time they ever see many of their classmates and former teachers. However, at Baines School, the FPA is there to ensure this does not happen, so close friends do not lose touch. One of the core roles of the group is to organise events, to reconnect and reminisce about school days as well as looking ahead together. The FPA organises an Annual Gathering, seasonal lunches, reunions and the President’s BBQ.

The FPA encourages its members to organise their own events and reunions and then report back on these in the Bainesian News. The Bainesian News is a way members of the Alumni and FPA can keep in touch with each other.

The FPA has a large membership of all ages and occupations around the globe. It supports the School in many ways, and is a vital network for engagement between the Family of Baines across the generations.

Since becoming President, it has been my aim to foster communication with the former pupils and staff with the production of a regular newsletter and the Baines Alumni website.  Having established these my aim in the 2025/6 Presidency is to support the school in different ways. We already sponsor the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and distribute funds to worthy projects in the school. But I would like to take this one stage further with the creation of a skills set to help support the school and its pupils. We all have talents that we have developed, why not share these talents with the pupils.  The school organises work experience and interview days for year 11 pupils, offering your services could kick start a pupil towards their future career.

Therefore, a significant role of the FPA is as a point of contact between the current pupils, who are just starting out on their journey, and former pupils, who have gone on to develop their careers. The shared experience that these two groups have, of benefitting from being members of the Family of Baines. The morals, principles and commitment to individual interests are present in recent pupils just as they are held by our FPA members too. Each member of the FPA therefore has much to gain from a shared bond, either professionally or simply for social reasons. It is a central pillar of the FPA that shared experience and different perspective enriches us all, it is the role of the FPA to facilitate this.
