The John's Career
John attended Baines between 1946 and 1953 before reading medicine at Manchester University. He undertook his National Service with the Green Howards as a doctor in Germany. He became a captain in the Green Howards. In 1967 he was awarded the Nuffield Prize being the best medical student in the UK studying Anaesthetics. In 1970 he became consultant of Anaesthetics at Wythenshaw Hospital. It was at this time that he pioneered the use of epidurals. In 1973 he became Head of Anaesthetics at Manchester Royal Infirmary.
He was on the Council of Manchester Medical Society from 1980 to 1985 and 1989 to 1990 and was also Honorary Secretary (Anaesthetics) from 1985 to 1989. He was the author of a book on anaesthetics published in both English and Japanese. He presented a paper at the meeting of ‘The History 0f Anaesthesia Society’ 8th - 9th June 1990 at Huddersfield entitled: ‘Historical Review of Methods of Prone Position’
I have since learnt that on diagnosis he joined the local Alzheimer’s Society and chaired meetings until he could no longer cope. (Brave man)
