Baines School Former Pupils' Association
Passing of Baz Ives
Baz Ives
Known to us as "Baz" he was one of our 1949 intake and one could say he was a "colourful character" and well remembered in the 6th form for arriving in a two tone red/cream Hillman Californian with white walled tyres or sometimes a BSA 150cc motor bike. On one occasion after school he fancied going to Fleetwood at great speed and offered me a lift home dropping me off a short distance away from home so as not to arouse the suspicion (or ire of mother) but I then had to explain why I was home 25 minutes earlier than usual and thus had to waffle about finishing earlier than usual and getting an early bus! (we didn't have crash helmets then!) After Baines, he went to Manchester College of Science and Technology but decided not to complete the course. He married and I lost track of him until meeting his nephew at one of the in school Baines Dinners who was one of the caretaking staff. We tried unsuccessfully to get him to join us. At the time, I seem to remember Muriel saying that he had grandchildren at Baines?
I certainly remember him. I remember attending an all-night party at his house in Blackpool accompanied by a young lady from Rossall Grange Lane called Pauline! I think he took a shine on Pauline, but he always had a roving eye! If I remember correctly, his first lady friend was called Christine. But you might have a different name.
We all took a bottle to the party and I took a half bottle of rum. I've never drunk rum since
Christmas Rap
Does anyone remember this? Tony Stuart was the singer with the school choir under the directorship of Robert Richmond
