Friends of North Sheen Recreation Ground – Who we are

  • Friends of North Sheen Recreation Ground is an independent community volunteer group
  • Please note that Richmond Council owns the Rec and is responsible for its upkeep and all facilities

Friends of North Sheen Recreation Ground – What we do

Our objectives are:

  • To protect and enhance North Sheen Rec as a community resource available for all to enjoy
  • To act as a two-way channel for communication between Richmond Council and Rec users
  • To suggest and propose new ideas to Richmond Council to improve the Rec for users
Friends of North Sheen Recreation Ground - what we've achieved
  • Encouraged Richmond Council to upgrade the playgrounds and worked with them on the plan; Friends' research backed up importance of the paddling pool (2014-15)
  • Friends' research supported retention of locking the Rec gates at night (2013)
  • Asked Richmind Council for flowerbeds (previously the Rec had no flowers) - again backed up by Friends' research (2015)
  • WW1 Commemorative Community Event and Exhibition (2015)
  • Asked Richmond Council for 6 new benches which were installed in 2015
  • Installation of outdoor drinking fountain free of charge from the Drinking Fountain Association (2016)
  • Collaborated with Richmond Council to apply for a £20k grant from London Marathon Trust for the Outdoor Gym (2017)
  • Encouraged Richmond Council to re-surface worn out paths (2018)
  • Started the Rec Dog Club (2018)
  • Encouraged Richmond Council to plant new trees (2017 and 2019 ...2019 promised by Richmond Council)
  • ...and represented Friends' views to Richmond Council on numerous issues and ideas for the Rec
Friends of North Sheen Recreation Ground – How we work
  • We have an Annual General Meeting (AGM) every year, open to all Friends (to become a Friend, go to our Become a Friend page - NB it's free!)
  • At the AGM Friends vote on priorities and activities for the next year
  • A Friends Committee is elected at the Annual General Meeting
  • Committee meetings are held regularly to progress ideas and activities
  • Information is sent out regularly via email to members

Friends of North Sheen Recreation Ground – User Research

We conducted a quantitative research study with 97 rec users in 2013 to find out what users wanted from the rec – results are available here (see PDF)
