Walmgate Research Project

York Archaeology is launching a groundbreaking, co-created community heritage project
this Wednesday evening at St. Denys Church Hall, Walmgate. Project lead, Arran Johnson
will present the preliminary ideas for the programme, alongside outlining the many
opportunities for local people to get involved.
A key goal of the meeting will be to establish an Interim Advisory Group. The role of this
group will be to advise on key decisions about the direction of the project, ensuring that it
reflects the interests and aspirations of the community. IAG members will attend
occasional meetings with York Archaeology and key stakeholders as the programme moves
into the second phase and funding applications are submitted.

York Archaeology is poised to continue its excavation efforts at Willow House into 2024 and there will be some exciting new opportunities for local people to get involved. This year marked a significant point in the excavation which helped uncover more evidence of the history of Victorian Walmgate, particularly the discovery of 19th century domestic structures along former Willow Street. Excitingly, the team have also discovered our first tantalising evidence of intact medieval archaeology!

We will be holding a drop in consultation at Willow House on

Saturday January 13th  between 10am and 2pm

where you can learn more about the project. Can’t make it? Please send any questions or comments to takepart@yorkat.co.uk or by post to Arran Johnson, Community Engagement Dept., St. Saviour’s Church, St. Saviourgate, York, YO1 8NN by January 20th.
