The Home of Earl and Countess Howe.  This is a unique opportunity to visit with guided tour by the owners.

This will be set in the Fountain Room, Stoke Park, Park Road, Stoke Poges, SL2 4PG.
Guest of honour: Mark Bradshaw, National Trust General Manager of the Cliveden Estate.
3 course dinner with glass of wine followed by tea or coffee.
Cash bar before and after the dinner.  There will also be a raffle.

  Maintenance Day around Gray's Monument
Church Lane, Stoke Poges.
Please come along at any time during this period and stay for as long as you like to help maintain the area around Gray's Monument and adjoining Gray's Field which is owned by the National Trust.  A National Trust Ranger will be leading the activity and supplying the majority of the tools.  If anyone wishes to bring their own tools then that's fine with the Ranger.  Tasks will include pulling the brambles, cutting some growth from trees and litter pick.  The Stoke Poges Society is supporting this event.

Soft drinks and snacks available.  Members of the Society will be on site.

Talk on Vesta Tilley who lived in Sefton Park in the 1920's, with photographs, musical entertainment and anecdotes.  Appropriate fancy dress optional.
Mulled Wine, Mince Pies, plus Raffle with proceeds going to our 10th anniversary event in 2019.

  Talk on "The Ladies of the Manor" by Diana Le Clercq
The Youth Hall, St. Andrew’s Centre, Rogers Lane, Stoke Poges, SL2 4LN.
Diana’s talk will cover the lives of four independent women from the 17th and 18th centuries including the tempestuous times of Elizabeth Cecil and her daughter Frances Coke and their battles with James I's Favourite, George Villiers and show how each of them came to be The Ladies of the Manor.

  The Queen's Walkway, Windsor
Self-guided walk with an afternoon tea.  This walking route (in place since September 2015 to mark the occasion of The Queen becoming Britain's longest reigning monarch) was opened by The Queen on her 90th birthday, 21 April 2016. The information panel she unveiled is located at the foot of Castle Hill.  The Queen's Walkway is a symbolic 6.373km long for the 63 years, 7 months and 3 days (one day more than Queen Victoria's reign) and links 63 of Windsor's best attractions, features and views.
At 2:30pm we will meet at the Queen Victoria Statue outside the castle.  We will then follow a shortened version of the walk visiting about 20 of the listed places in the central Windsor area, ending at the River Street Car Park.  There is then the option of an afternoon tea at a local venue.

  Talk on "Hall Barn" by Julian Hunt
The Youth Hall, St. Andrew’s Centre, Rogers Lane, Stoke Poges, SL2 4LN.
Built in the 1600s by the poet and MP Edmund Waller, Hall Barn is an impressive and extensive estate in Beaconsfield.  Nowadays, it is most likely to be seen during its summer open-air Shakespeare season, or as a location in various films and Midsomer Murders.

  Dorney Court visit
Dorney, Bucks, SL4 6QP
Dorney Court is a grade I listed early Tudor manor house, dating from around 1440. Located in the village of Dorney it is owned and lived in by the Palmer family.  We will have a group tour of one of England’s loveliest houses, with little changed in 600 years.
Visitors also have free access to the ancient Norman church of St James the Less and are welcome to explore the Gardens, woodland and Park.  The cafe at the garden centre next door is available for lunch or tea, coffee and cakes.  Meet for lunch first before our tour starts promptly at 2:30pm.
£9.00 for adults, £8.50 for concessions

The world's oldest mechanised paper mill and birthplace of paper's industrial revolution.  Will include lunch and a boat trip.
Coach departs from the Village Centre at 09.40 and leaves Frogmore Mill at 16.00
11.00 tour - Tea and coffee on arrival, presentation, tour of the mill, interactive paper making session, lunch and canal boat trip on River Gade up to Grand Union Canal and return.
Lunch must be pre-booked by 8th September:  Choose between:  Fish and chips, Chicken & Mushroom Pie, Steak & Kidney Pie, Beef & Onion Pie, Cornish Pasty, Burgers, Sausages with batter or without, and Saveloys, all with chips.

The Natural History Museum is in South Meadow Lane, Eton, SL4 6EW
More than 16,000 specimens and displays are housed at the Natural History Museum, exploring themes including Thames Valley wildlife, biodiversity, evolution, and ecology.
The Museum of Eton Life brings alive various aspects of the Eton experience across six centuries. It is housed in an undercroft below College Hall, a space that was used to store beer for the scholarship boys until the early 20th century.

  Talk: "We are CWGC" (Commonwealth War Graves Commission)

On Zoom

This talk will be given by Will Reid of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.  The presentation provides an overview of the organisation from past to present with reference to the sites they care for.
It will begin by discussing the conception of the CWGC by the founder and the principles put into place at that time that continues to define what they do and how they do it.  To illustrate this, he will then show the sites cared for in the UK and around the world and what to look for when visiting them.
A discussion of the challenges they face and the work they do today will then follow.
The presentation is rounded off with a personal story tailored to the local area.

  Gray Art Exhibition

This event is open to the general public.

There will be an art exhibition focussed on Thomas Gray and St Giles’ church inside St Giles’ church.  Works of art from community groups and schools, together with either original or reproduced art from Colleges attended by Thomas Gray will be on display.

  Remembering Thomas Gray

St Giles’ Church, Church Lane, Stoke Poges SL2 4NZ

This event is open to the general public.
On Friday 30th July, at 11am there will be a short liturgy in St Giles’ church to remember the life of Thomas Gray and give thanks for his poetry.  Then a wreath will be laid on his tomb. He died 250 years ago on 30th July, 1771 and was buried a week later in St Giles’ churchyard. Stoke Poges Church will make arrangements with regard to Covid-19 restrictions such as booking and social distancing inside the church.

  Heritage Open Day

The Memorial Gardens, St. Giles Church, The Gray Memorial

This event is open to the general public.

There will be a welcome desk in the Memorial Gardens hosted by members of the Society.
Members of Stoke Poges Church will be able to assist with information at St Giles’ church. There will also be a unique opportunity to visit the bell tower and learn more about bell ringing. National Trust staff will be at Gray’s monument with their information.

Hopefully, there will be the opportunity to take a walk and read the new information on the Heritage Walk leaflet which was brought out last April to coincide with the new Buckinghamshire Council.

  Tour of Baylis House and Baylis Park

Baylis House is near the junction of Stoke Poges Lane and Oatlands Drive, Slough, SL1 3PB.

Tour of Baylis house and park with Elias Kupfermann.
The Grade 1 Listed national heritage asset and surrounding land used to be in the  Parish of Stoke Poges till 1900.  It is now one of the very few remaining real old houses left in Slough.
This tour supports the talk delivered on 12th May about the house and estate.

  River Boat Trip at Windsor

Windsor Promenade, Barry Avenue SL4 1QX

Join us for a two hour cruise from Windsor.  Travelling briefly upstream before turning to go down through Romney Lock towards Old Windsor.  The cruise will travel through Crown Estate land giving fantastic views of Windsor Castle and His Majesty’s back garden (the Thames Path is suspended at this point for security reasons so the only way of seeing this is by river).  You will travel through Datchet towards Old Windsor before turning and arriving back at the Windsor Promenade.  The skipper will provide an informative commentary throughout the trip of the places of interest.
There will be a cash bar available during the trip (no credit cards).

£20 trip with cream tea for members (subsidised by the Society)

The Chiltern Open Air Museum mission is to rescue threatened historic buildings from the Chilterns and to preserve them for future generations. They have re-erected 37 rescued buildings to date, spanning 2,000 years of Chilterns architecture and including a reconstructed Iron Age roundhouse, built using data from an archaeological dig near Dunstable, and Medieval and Tudor barns.  The Museum’s Victorian buildings include a working Victorian farm, toll house and forge, a tin chapel, vicarage room and newly-rebuilt wychert cottage.  From more modern times, our collection includes a 1940s Prefab, Nissen Hut and a Furniture Factory from High Wycombe.

Baylis House is near the junction of Stoke Poges Lane and Oatlands Drive, Slough, SL1 3PB

The Grade 1 Listed national heritage asset and surrounding land used to be in the  Parish of Stoke Poges till 1900.  It is now one of the very few remaining real old houses left in Slough.
This tour supports the talk delivered on 12th May 2022 about the house and estate.

MI9 was a branch of the British Intelligence in WW2 to facilitate the escape of prisoners. Their HQ was close to Stoke Poges.
