Talk: "The Romans in Buckinghamshire"
The Main Hall, St. Andrew’s Centre, Rogers Lane, Stoke Poges, SL2 4LN
The talk will be given by Dr Jill Eyers who has been involved in a variety of interesting projects including Iron Age, Saxon and Norman sites, and, in particular, investigations into a Roman villa site in Buckinghamshire: Yewden Villa. The results of this project went world-wide with research into 97 baby burials. These findings were broadcast on BBC television’s "Digging for Britain" and have resulted in several professional papers.
She may bring along some Roman artefacts.
(You can listen to a little bit about it with Prof. Alice Roberts on this YouTube video).
Images of stone Roman busts uneathed at St Mary's church, Stoke Mandeville during the HS2 dig. Photos taken by Harvey Whittam when the busts were on display in the Discover Bucks Museum.
Born in London, with an early childhood in Australia, Dr Eyers studied geology achieving her doctorate in 1992. Since that time she has lectured for several UK universities, including Oxford, Open and Reading. Her geological career took her to many parts of the world with projects in Brazil and Turkey being particularly exciting. Most of her professional work was as a freelance consultant. Recently her geological expertise has been put to good use giving advice and training to archaeologists. This work became so successful that in 2006 she set up Chiltern Archaeology.
Dr Eyers is a regular contributor to archaeological television programmes incuding Digging for Britain, as well as BBC Radio Oxford, BBC Berkshire and BBC London. If there is any time for anything else - she has filled it by writing numerous books.
Dr Eyers' books include a field guide series called 'Rocks Afoot', the Geology and Archaeology of Lycia, Turkey, Journey through the Chiltern Hills, Food down the ages, The Little Tree Book, Chiltern Trails and Tales, and Geology of the Norfolk coast.
