Sudbury Grammar School - circa 1904
The Association was formed to provide continued contact between those who had attended The Sudbury Grammar School, maintaining the social camaraderie established during their formative years. The Association has periodically suffered from lack of support, brought about by the World Conflicts of the first half of the 20th Century and the Economic, Domestic and Political changes of the 1960s and 70s, culminated with the closure of The Grammar School in July 1972, and the transfer of pupils to the then new Sudbury Upper School, which has subsequently become Ormiston Sudbury Academy.
The current Association was re-launched in 1991, on the Quincentenary of the founding of The Grammar School by William Wood in 1491. The current membership has fallen to less than 90 a large proportion of whom attended the School in the 1940's - 1950's. All Old Boys are welcomed as new members and particularly those from the 1960's up to the school closure in 1972.
Three major activities are, the AGM held in March, the Annual Cricket match against the Sudburians in July, and luncheon with a guest speaker in September. Various other events are held to commemorate Old Boys, dedications and other presentations connected with heritage of Sudbury Grammar School, and visits to places if interest in Suffolk
A biannual Magazine is mailed to all members in January and July. It carries articles contributed by Old Boys and members covering such diverse subjects as school memories, historical research on famous Old Boys and Masters from an earlier Century, poetry and extracts from past editions of The Talbot. Regular features on changes to Sudbury and the environs, and reports by our late Archivist, Tim Underwood, on collected school memorabilia and photographs, helps to maintain continuity for those members who now live-away from Sudbury.
*The archives have recently been transferred for safe keeping to the Sudbury Ephemera Archive and Sudbury Museum Tust.
