House Martins are, like Swifts, on the UK list of birds of conservation concern.

Many of the things that make Lewes a Swift-friendly Town will help House Martins because they are also insect-eating birds.
One of the factors in their decline is thought to be dry spring and summer weather causing a lack of mud to build their nests. Artificial nest cups, such as the ones made by Paul Stevens, give the House Martins a head start. One nest cup that we installed in St. John's Terrace in May 2026 was occupied by House Martins in the following June!
If you live in an area of Lewes where you see House Martins, or they are nesting nearby, or they sued to nest at your house, do get in touch. If your house is suitable, we may be able to fund the purchase and installation of an artificial House Martin cup.
