"Freedom to offend?"
Monday 05 March 2012
18:00 to 19:30
Assuming that media freedom and regulation might still be topical, we will discuss the merits of freedom of expression and speech (as claimed by John Stuart Mill and the poet Milton) versus the perceived need to restrict and regulate the media (as argued in the Leveson report). An interesting bit of pre-reading would be philosopher Onora O'Neill's 2011 lecture on "The Rights of Journalism and the Needs of Audiences".
Tbc - if other offers materialise we may postpone this discussion.
All welcome. Bridges evening entrance from Kingston riverside, next to The Gazebo pub. Doors open at 5.30pm for a 6.00pm prompt start. Free, but be prepared to buy refreshments; donations towards costs welcome.
