"Free expression – where should we draw the line?"

Thursday 02 June 2011
18:00 to 19:30

In an era characterised by Wikileaks, freedom of information legislation, media coverage of private lives, artistic experiment, the right to freedom of expression, versus the right to privacy, state censorship, injunctions and super-injunctions, religious sensitivities and "political correctness",  Marilyn Mason asks what, if any, are the reasonable limits on free expression. Can artistic freedom justify pornography or depictions of extreme violence? When should offensive acts or words be criminal offences? We will discuss these and other questions with a little help from John Stuart Mill and (audio equipment willing) Professor Tim Scanlon of Harvard University’s Philosophy Department. The quotations and questions the discussion will start from are at http://www.e-voice.org.uk/kingstonphilosophycafe/files/view/philosophy-cafe-briefings/freespeech.doc - though doubtless others will come up as we talk.
