Was Hegel an Atheist?

Wednesday 30 October 2019
19:00 to 20:30

At 19:00 Phil Walden will give a talk on this topic.

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (August 27, 1770 – November 14, 1831) was a German philosopher and an important figure of German idealism.  At the age of eighteen, Hegel entered the Tübinger Stift (a Protestant seminary attached to the University of Tübingen), where he had as roommates the poet and philosopher Friedrich Hölderlin and the philosopher-to-be Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling.  As a graduate of a Protestant seminary, Hegel's theological concerns were reflected in many of his writings and lectures.  According to Hegel himself, his philosophy was consistent with Christianity.  But was he really an atheist?
