The Ethics of Spinoza

Wednesday 31 July 2019
19:30 to 21:00

Tom Rubens will give a talk introducing the ethical thought of the 17th century Dutch rationalist philosopher Baruch Spinoza.

Please note that this talk will start at 19:30 rather than our usual 19:00.

Spinoza was a leading thinker of the 17th century, and is someone in whom interest has continued to grow, especially from the 19th century onwards.

The talk will look at interlocking areas of Spinoza's ethical thinking, including:

  • Spinoza's view of reality, in relation to his ethical outlook
  • Definition of human 'freedom', and how this can be achieved
  • The concept of human 'servitude'
  • Notions of ethical 'good' and 'bad'

Tom Rubens is a published Philosophy writer and novelist who teaches at the RHACC in the School of Ideas.
