“Moral Certainty or Moral Relativism?”
Wednesday 21 April 2010
19:00 to 21:00
A Wednesday discussion in the Grey Horse pub back room, led by Roger Jennings:
Are there objective criteria by which we can judge what is good or bad, right or wrong? If not, does this mean that moral choice is simply a matter of subjective judgement influenced primarily, perhaps, by our own feelings and emotions? If morality is essentially subjective are we then committed to moral relativism, avoiding judgements about people/societies with different value/belief systems from our own? These questions will be explored by examining and evaluating different approaches to ethics. Key areas for discussion will include the distinction between ‘teleological’ and ‘deontological’ approaches, the nature of ‘virtue ethics’ and the moral relevance of religion.
