Virtue and Liberty in Machiavelli
Wednesday 30 January 2019
19:00 to 20:30
A talk by Anja Steinbauer and Marcel Steinbauer-Lewis
Who was Machiavelli? Many see him as a ruthless thinker advocating devious manipulation and brute force to secure political success for remorseless despots. Some have begun to see him as a more romantic figure, and yet others believe him to be a defender of liberty for all. In our talk we will focus on Machiavelli’s ideas on virtue and moral goodness to find out what he really thought about who should rule and what it takes to be or to resist an oppressor.
