Tuesday 27 October: "What is this thing called love?"
Tuesday 27 October 2009
17:30 to 19:00
To tie in with the Rose Theatre's "Behind Closed Doors" season, philosopher and Vice-President of Philosophy For All Filiz Peach will be leading a discussion on aspects of love and lust.
Is love simply a biological/evolutionary need? Does selfless love exist or is it a myth? It is said that true love gravitates toward what's morally good - if so, what constitutes the morally good? How do we distinguish love from other emotions? What is lust, and is it a challenge to spirituality and ethics? It certainly stirs the imagination. Some reductionists claim that love is lust 'dressed up'. Perhaps 'love is but the frailty of the mind' as declared in a 17th century song? Together we will explore these ideas and what they entail.
NB - this Kingston Philosophy Cafe event is not on our usual day or at the usual time: it's a Tuesday evening pre-show event from 5.30 - 7.00pm.
