August 27: “Whatever you think about rationalism is probably wrong.”
Thursday 27 August 2009
18:00 to 19:25
Whether it comes from Bertrand Russell or Richard Dawkins, ‘rationalism’ in the modern, humanistic sense can mean pretty much any approach to knowledge emphasising scepticism, reason and evidence. Relativist and ‘post-modern’ objections to rationalism have been counter-criticised, dismissed, or brilliantly spoofed ad nauseam. But what of good objections which come from within the rationalist camp itself? Speaker Bob Churchill will challenge some of the deeply-rooted preconceptions within rationalism, showing that if some lesser known problems are taken seriously, the solutions can produce a refined, battle-hardened, more critical rationalism. And if you have no rationalist preconceptions, come along anyway, learn something about this philosophical concept, ask questions and join in the discussion.
Do carry on discussing in the pub afterwards.
