Grandad’s Army Dish

Ingredients

1 kg beef steak cut into thin steaks
1 tsp salt
1 tsp turmeric
3 tsp fresh pepper powder
1 tbsp Lea & Perrin sauce
3 tbsp oil
2 large onions sliced finely
2 large tomatoes - chopped
2 tsp chopped garlic
3 green chillies sliced
1 tbsp tomato sauce
Oil for frying

To serve
3 potatoes cut into chips and fried or oven baked
Fried eggs

Cooking Steps

Step 1
Wash the steaks, drain and spread on a flat plate. Mix the pepper powder, salt and turmeric with a splash of Lea & Perrin sauce and rub into the meat... Pour the oil over the top of the steaks and keep overnight in the fridge (or for at least
4 hrs).

Step 2
Pressure-cook the steaks for 5 mins or cook in a pan for 20-25 mins until all the juices have evaporated and the meat is tender. Remove and keep aside.

Step 3
Fry the onions in a little oil until pale brown. Add the garlic, green chillies and tomatoes and continue to
cook on a low heat until the tomatoes turn pulpy.

Add the cooked steaks back into the pan, add 1 tbsp tomato ketchup and mix well. Taste and season well.

If the meat is still tough, put the whole dish (in a covered pan) in the oven for another 30-40 min s(150-180F) to tenderize.

Serve with fried eggs and chips.
