Bluebell Allotments History

The Bluebell Allotment Site, which lies on either side of The Avenues and was laid out by Captain Arnold Edward Sandys-Winsch.

Captain Sandys-Winsch, Parks Superintendent for Norwich between 1919 -1953, was responsible for many of the City’s fine parks including Heigham Park and Eaton Park. Through the years he held his post in the city, he planted 20,000 trees.

He recommended that the Norwich Corporation purchase the four fields which became the current site of Bluebell Model Allotments North and South. Although planned as one site the Corporation decided to use some of the land for housing and laid out The Avenues, a road running from the ring road to Bluebell Road.

In the post first world war period of high unemployment, the Government passed an Allotment Act to enable unemployed and low waged men to grow food for their families.

Laying out the site involved making the roads, erecting the sheds, planting fruit trees and laying on water. They were truly “model’ allotments! It employed 70 men for 20 weeks at an estimated cost of £8,000.

In 1926 the Bluebell Model Allotment Association was born and still exists today. The association offers its members, for a small annual fee, access to a shop selling gardening sundries and seeds, events and a place to exchange gardening tips.
