The Romans in Furness
A talk by Dan Elsworth
The question of whether the Roman Empire ever took control of the Furness Peninsula has been debated amongst antiquarians and archaeologists since at least the late 18th century. Opinion has shifted over the years but new evidence appears all the time and this talk examines the various different strands of information, some old and some recent, and attempts to finds some answers.
Dan Elsworth has worked as a professional archaeologist for almost 25 years and has been involved in archaeological research in the Furness area for over 30 years. He has run Greenlane Archaeology, based in Ulverston, since 2005 and has a range of areas of interest, from the Mesolithic hunter-gatherers, to standing buildings and industrial archaeology
