Access at last to the canal at Lollies Bridge, Lydiate

Lollies

lollies 3lollieslolliesWay back in August 2023, we reported to Sefton PROW that the footpath opposite the towpath between Sandy Lane and Lollies Bridge was overgrown and inaccessible.  The steps at Lollies Bridge are the only way up from the canal to the road so it is an important path.  It is quite high and there is a steep drop to the canal at this point so it could be dangerous for walkers.  A reference number was issued: 1321856.  It was however unclear whether this path is managed by Sefton or the Canal and River Trust.

As no progress was made, we reported it to the CRT in June 2024.  The CRT went out to look at it and agreed that the path was in an appalling state. However, they too were unsure if the path is  maintained (or not)  by Sefton Council rather than the CRT. We were told they would look into this and get back to us.

It was only recently that on a recce on Lydiate, we discovered that the path had been comprehensively cleared.  Not only that but it has been resurfaced and fencing has been erected to ensure walkers do not stray over the edge.  Furthermore, there appears to be resurfacing of the path leading to Billy's Bridge too.  A very satisfactory result that we had not been aware of, and we are not sure who is responsible for it!
