📣 16 Days of Activism: New 10-Day Educational Series

As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we are sharing a powerful new 10-day essay series written by Nicki A. This series shines a light on the hidden and often misunderstood forms of abuse that many women and girls experience long before physical violence is ever present.

Emotional and psychological abuse can be subtle, gradual, and deeply damaging. Through clear explanations and real-world insights, this series explores:

  • How perpetrators use charm and intensity to groom victims

  • Why early red flags can be easy to miss

  • The tactics used to break down confidence and autonomy

  • How chaos, urgency, and manipulation become tools of control

  • What healthy, respectful connection should feel like

This series is designed to educate, empower, and support our community during this global period of action and awareness.

It forms part of our ongoing commitment to challenging harmful behaviours, amplifying survivor voices, and advocating for the safety and dignity of all women and girls.

👉 Read the full 10-day series on our social platforms:

Together, we continue to raise our voices, stand against all forms of abuse, and work toward a world where every woman and girl can live free from violence.

Beverley Anderson-Manley (Jamaica)

Women’s Advocate & Campaigner Against Gender-Based Violence

Beverley Anderson-Manley, an influential Jamaican activist and former First Lady, used her platform to spotlight violence against women and the systemic inequalities that made women vulnerable. She openly challenged patriarchal norms and fought for legal reforms to protect women from domestic and sexual abuse. Her grassroots work, particularly through women’s organisations in Kingston, helped create space for survivors to be heard at a national level. Anderson-Manley’s activism reshaped Jamaica’s conversation about women’s safety and rights.

Adelaide Casely-Hayford (Sierra Leone)

Educator & Champion of Girls’ Safety and Empowerment

Adelaide Casely-Hayford dedicated her life to transforming the lives of West African girls. She founded the Girls’ Vocational School in Freetown, promoting self-reliance and cultural pride at a time when girls were often denied education and autonomy. She advocated publicly for girls’ protection, condemning early marriage, financial exploitation, and any form of harm against young women. Through lectures, essays, and community organising, she pushed for a society where girls were safe, educated, and empowered to lead.

Una Marson (Jamaica)

Anti-Racism Feminist, Poet & Advocate for Women’s Safety

Una Marson was a groundbreaking Jamaican feminist, journalist, and broadcaster. Through her plays and poetry, she spoke out against sexual harassment, colourism, and the insecurities placed on Black women’s bodies. When she moved to London in the 1930s, she campaigned boldly for racial and gender equality, raising awareness of domestic violence and discriminatory working conditions facing Caribbean women. Marson also supported women fleeing abuse and used her BBC platform to challenge global injustice. She remains one of the Caribbean’s most radical women’s rights voices.

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti (Nigeria)

Women’s Rights Pioneer & Anti-Violence Activist

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was one of Nigeria’s most influential activists and a fearless defender of women. In the 1940s, she led the Abeokuta Women’s Union, mobilising thousands of market women to protest unfair taxes and the sexual harassment they faced from colonial officers and local authorities. Her organising forced the system to change. She championed women’s voting rights, access to education, and protections from state violence. Ransome-Kuti dedicated her life to a Nigeria where women could live with dignity, and her legacy paved the way for women’s movements across West Africa.
