For any new members there is an explanation of the Informal Competition at the end of this newsletter.

Spring Show

Held on Saturday 21st March, the show proved to be a success, despite the random power cuts that dogged us throughout the day (especially around lunchtime). Whilst entries were not as high as on some previous occasions, the standard was generally very good considering the awful weather in the months leading up to the show. Thanks go to the show committee for all their hard work and to the many members who exhibited and gave a hand with setting-up, stewarding and with the clear-up at the end of the afternoon. Thanks to all who attended and bought tombola tickets, plants and bric-a-brac. This income helps to offset the cost of putting on the show.

Guidelines for Monthly Meeting Informal Competitions

This is, first and foremost, an opportunity for members to display things they have grown or made, for the interest and enjoyment of other members. (See note 1 below). The intention is that it should stimulate discussion and help members to learn from the skill and experience of others. We wish to encourage all members to participate.

The competition element is still valid but should be seen as a secondary consideration and not taken over seriously, bearing in mind that the judging is carried out by fellow members who are not qualified judges (see below). We have attempted to put in place some guidelines to make things clearer whilst at the same time being mindful that this is not a formal competition.

·         There are 3 categories:

                Fruit and Vegetables;

                Flowers and Plants;

                Craft (to include art, needlework, knitted/crocheted items and homemade models)

·         Only one entry per person, per category (see note 1 below)

·         No entries to be shown that have been entered previously

·         Judges’ decisions to be accepted with good grace.

·         Judging criteria will be based on a balance of quality of entry against quantity of entry (see note 2 below)

·         There will, generally, be just one winner per category.

Judging - at each meeting we look for some volunteers to act as judges. They are each given 3 coloured discs to correspond with three different categories. At the start of the interval the disc holders should inspect the entries on the show tables and vote for the entry they deem to be the best. The discs are subsequently counted and the winner identified.

Note ---

1.       Each entry must have the name of the exhibitor on a small card or slip of paper, placed face down to ensure anonymity for judging purposes. Also, if possible, a further card/slip of paper should give details about the entry e.g., variety of exhibit, name of bloom if unusual etc.

2.       For small/medium vegetables & and small fruit items, a minimum of three, preferably five, items must be submitted so that consistency can be assessed. For blooms, ideally, a minimum of three blooms is required, again, to show consistency. Small/medium are fruit and vegetables such as tomatoes, potatoes, peas, beans, carrots, parsnips, onions, etc.

 IMPORTANT

In order to make the lives of the Treasurer and myself a little less stressful, whenever you are paying for anything by BACS would you please send me a short text with the details. The length of the reference field on BACS is, for some banks, quite restricted, meaning vital details are missed. Your cooperation is much appreciated.

 Trophies

Just a reminder -

You are probably aware the PGA have decided to discontinue the awarding of trophies at our shows & will be giving out certificates instead. This is because the number of trophies we own has become very large, making them difficult to store & organise. Many of the entrants in our Shows decline to take a trophy home & the certificates are easier to manage & store.

 We now wish to reclaim any of our trophies that are not currently in our possession and decide what to do with them. For that reason, we would like to have any trophy that you, or anyone you know, are currently holding returned to us as soon as possible. You can bring it to a meeting or deliver it to Chris Bishop at 12, Treverbyn Rd. PL7 4EP. Telephone 01752 344048. Email djcabishop@aol.com

 If you would like to keep a trophy that is in your possession in exchange for a donation to our charity (minimum donation £5) then please let Chris Bishop know. There will be an opportunity later this year for you to purchase any remaining trophies

We will aim to get through the formal business as efficiently as we can. The agenda will include the Chairman’s Report, the Treasurer’s report and the election of officers. The officers and committee members have all indicated that they are willing to continue in office if elected. Spring Show – Saturday 21st March

The show sub-committee have now confirmed the judges for the show. The schedule has been agreed and paper copies will be available at Thursday’s meeting. There is an electronic version, available to print, at the end of the Newsletter. Where possible we would ask members to print their own schedules to save on costs.

Staging takes place on Friday 20th from 5.00 – 7.45pm and on the morning of the show from 7.30 – 9.30am. Judging then commences and the show opens to the public at 1.30pm. Entrance is £1.

Volunteers are required on Friday afternoon, from 4.00pm, to help set up tables, lay out tablecloths and arrange exhibit spacings. Equally important is help to clear up at the end of the afternoon.

We would be very grateful for donations of tombola and bric-a-brac items for use at the show. Please bring any donations to the February or March meetings.

Daffodil Competition

Just a reminder that judging will take place during the March meeting.

Coffee Bar

The last coffee bar made a profit of £580 which, considering the atrocious weather we experienced during the week, was an excellent achievement. Lloyd wishes to thank all those members who helped and to those that donated cakes, tombola prizes, and bric-a-brac items. The monies raised will be used to support our selected charity for 2026 – British Heart Foundation. The next coffee bar is in October 2026. For 2027, we will have weeks in March and October.

Membership

The annual subscription remains at a very reasonable £5. Thanks to all those members who have already paid – cards will be available for collection on Thursday evening. For those members yet to pay we can take your payment at the meeting.
