Phoenix Girls Football Development was founded in 2025 by Mike Jewsbury, a FA/UEFA qualified coach with over seven years experience of coaching grassroots football to girls teams in Oldham, Greater Manchester.

We are a not-for-profit community club that only re-invests money raised back into the club. Our members (parent/guardian of a player) each have a say in how the club is run, this is acheived by attending the annual general members meeting (AGM). Taking this approach demonstrates our commitment to transparency in all that we do and that we encourage collaboration with everyone at the club.

Although some football clubs are beginning to build girls football teams, the number of boys teams far outweigh that of girls, and Mike believes that there is still an unfair bias that isn't being addressed. Mike is determined to change that through Phoenix Girls Football Development.

Our coaches are typically Mum's and Dad's of footballing daughters. They are volunteers whose focus is to develop girls to become the best footballer they want to be. Respect is one of our core values, and for girls that want to learn, build confidence and have fun playing football, Phoenix Girls FD is the best place to be.

Our group of coaches have led teams to trophies and players to ETC level (Emerging Talent Centre - part of the FA pathway to the highest level of football), but more than that, they have helped female footballers develop their skills and confidence from any ability level in the best environment.

Where we train...

Our training sessions take place on the outdoor AstroTurf/3G pitch at The Hathershaw College, Bellfield Ave, Oldham, OL8 3EP.

The pitch is situated within the school/college grounds in secure location, and is managed by the amazing staff at The Hathershaw College. This is ideal for girls new to football that want to build their confidence without unwanted distractions.

We are growing all the time and The Hathershaw College is the perfect place to embrace that expansion.

What stage we're at...
Teal upward facing bar chart We are at the beginning of what we believe to be a positive journey for Girls football in Oldham. This means that we have to manage the numbers to ensure we are not overwhelmed before we get into our rythm. Therefore, we are currently (April 2026) providing training to Girls from school years 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10. Any Girls from these age groups should get in touch now!
What does it cost?

Another objective of Phoenix Girls FD is to keep the cost of football as low as possible. Sub payments are needed to hire facilities, purchase equipment, go towards kits, and purchase trophies for an annual celebration. The average subs for clubs around Oldham is £30p/m.

Subs at Phoenix Girls FD are £23p/m, paid by bank transfer/standing order on a monthly basis.

Registration/sign-on fee. If we are unable to form a competitive football team in time for a season, we will not ask those players for a registration/sign-on fee (£20 per year). This is further evidence that we want football to be accessible to as many Girls as possible.

Our objectives for 2026...

For 2026/27 we aim to have at least 6 girls per age group training with us. However, if we have enough players in the same age group that want to play competitively on a Saturday or a Sunday, we will certainly form these teams and enter them into a FA league within Greater Manchester.

We are very confident that Girls who join Phoenix Girls Football Development will settle in very quickly, and because our first two sessions are free, a child has ample time to decide if they want to commit.

We develop Girls that want to play football to the best of their ability. Players that focus and train hard have the most amount of fun, and the rewards are totally worth the effort!
