Monday Bridge Club – Our Competitions

Throughout the year, Monday Bridge Club runs a variety of friendly yet competitive events. Some are long-running trophy competitions, while others are one-off evenings with a more relaxed feel. This page gives an overview of each competition and who it might appeal to.

Goblet 🏆

Annual individual trophy – based on performance across the year

The Goblet is an individual competition that runs throughout the club year. Unlike normal pairs events where results depend on your partner, the Goblet tracks your personal performance over a series of designated club sessions.

Each qualifying evening contributes to your overall Goblet standing. At the end of the year, the player with the strongest set of results is awarded the Goblet. It recognises steady, consistent performance over time, regardless of who you partnered with.

Who it’s for: any member who attends regularly and would like their year-long results to count towards a friendly “player of the year” style trophy.

Salver 🥇

Flagship pairs trophy – played on the first Monday of each month

The Salver is our main pairs competition. It is held on the first Monday of each month, and the results from these monthly sessions are combined to produce the overall Salver rankings for the year.

The partnership with the best combined performance across the Salver sessions wins the trophy. The event rewards consistency, partnership understanding and strong performance across several months.

Who it’s for: regular or aspiring partnerships who enjoy playing together and would like their monthly results to count towards a year-long competition.

Championship Pairs 🎖️

Annual event – teams of four (two pairs) competing for the club championship

The Championship Pairs is our flagship competitive event of the year. It is run as a teams-of-four competition, with each team made up of two fixed partnerships. Teams compete across the evening, with scores building round by round. Although still friendly and good-spirited, the event carries a little extra excitement as the leading teams can change right up to the final boards.

Who it’s for: players who enjoy a competitive evening and would like the chance to become club champions as part of a team of four.

Mixed Pair 💚

A man and a woman playing together as a partnership

The Mixed Pair competition is open to mixed-gender partnerships (one man and one woman). The format is a standard duplicate session, but the Mixed Pair trophy is awarded based only on the eligible partnerships.

It is a sociable and enjoyable evening with the extra interest of comparing your performance against other mixed pairs in the club.

Who it’s for: any man–woman partnership, whether long-standing or newly formed, looking for a friendly but special competition night.

Individual 🎄

Played at the Christmas Party – relaxed, informal and very social

The Individual competition takes place during our Christmas Party and is designed to be one of the most social events of the year. Instead of staying with the same partner, players change partners throughout the evening, giving everyone the chance to meet and play with others.

The atmosphere is relaxed and festive, with the emphasis on enjoyment and good company.

Who it’s for: absolutely everyone – especially those who enjoy a more informal evening and the opportunity to play with a variety of partners.

Handicap ⚖️

Results adjusted for strength of pair – EBU scoring unaffected

The Handicap competition uses adjusted scores to account for the relative strengths and weaknesses of different pairs. This helps level the playing field so that all partnerships, including newer or returning players, have a fair chance of doing well.

Handicap adjustments apply only to this club competition. Your underlying EBU and NGS scores remain unchanged.

Who it’s for: all members, especially those who appreciate an evening where everyone starts on a more equal footing.
