Field Trip: Orwell Country Park
Sunday 15 September 2024
10:00 to 14:00
Bordered by the Orwell Estuary and the A14, Orwell Country Park is a 300-acre site of mixed lowland habitats, including ancient woodland, heathland, mudflats, and views of the Orwell Bridge The Country Park offers visitors a variety of walks, wildlife, and scenery to explore and enjoy. Bridge Wood is an area of 74 acres, designated as a Local Nature Reserve, County Wildlife Site and Ancient Woodland. The woodland is predominantly made of native broad-leaved woodland, pine and sycamore plantation. It is thought that Bridge Wood could have got its name from an old Roman crossing point known as a bridge. This path was made up of shale and stone and allowed people to cross the river at low tide. A band of shale can still be seen today at low tide near the present Orwell Bridge.
