Here's Jonathan's end of season report for the second team.
Many congratulations to the second team for winning the second division of the Bucks League, the only blemish on the season being a loss to the third team (after which we changed the top board). I expected we would win as the second team is more experienced than most of the other teams, but I don’t think we were ever under serious pressure and definitely had too much class for our nearest rivals. Thanks to everybody for playing.
The statistics are below. In particular well done to Gerald for effectively dispatching most of his opponents – and only losing to a couple of un-graded players.

Bucks League - 15/4/2015
There has been very little by way of match reports this season, but with the season reaching its climax, it feels right to put pen to paper. Readers may be aware that coverage has been particularly patchy since the first team loss away at Bourne End, the prospect of describing another season as runners-up too much to stomach. Happily we won the return fixture with Guy Moss managing a last gasp victory with seconds left on the clock, just as I prepared to all but concede the title. This has left us chasing big wins, as the league is certain to be decided on game points. The team has responded well by thumping Slough at home, and received a notable lift when the second team took 2.5 points from their match at Bourne End [Edward Basham has arguably done as much for the first team cause as anyone by beating Roger de Coverly twice this year, and filling in at Slough].
And so to last night where with Bourne End playing their last fixture and predicted to win 6:0 the target for Wycombe was down to 10.5 game points (from 12). And the target became 9.5 game points earlier in the week as Berkhamsted could only raise a team of five players. The early notice was appreciated, and I expect we would have been favourites to win against a reserve player, but clearly free points in such a closely fought competition are not ideal. Nevertheless it meant I could attend as a non-playing reserve, enjoy an outstanding canal-side pub, and still get back to the venue for the closing stages. Two games had actually concluded before my return with draws on the top two boards - John Syner's unbeaten league record remaining intact. There didn't seem to be too much joy on the other boards and from my perspective, time management was a bit of a worry. Edward Basham could only draw in an unexpected dip from the level of performance we have come to expect. So we really needed two wins in the other games. Richard Symonds fought on in a difficult endgame, and probably missed a win due to his time shortage to only draw. At this stage with Peter Finn better on the board but with practically no time left, I started to think we might only draw the match. And then Peter's clock seemed to stand still, whilst his opponent's raced past him - a win on time with barely any time at all on either clock (if ever there were a case for digital clocks this was it). So we won 4:2.
Surely this wouldn't be enough, a downbeat journey home. And then the result from Bourne End - Gerrards Cross came through, Bourne End had dropped a point. There is still hope! Next and final stop 29 April against Bourne End second team. A win by 5.5:0.5 will mean the team retain the Bucks league title. Carpe Diem! Final score Berkhamsted 1 2: W&Hz 1 4.

Bucks League - 3/11/2014
Those who see luck in the ability of chess players to escape hopeless or poor positions would have enjoyed this match. Personally I see chess as a struggle between two imperfect players and that this inevitably leads to an ebb and flow in the game. A well controlled game is a rarity, so any spectators or players with half an eye on the match position as well as their own game are almost guaranteed a tense evening. Greg Edmonds game was an example of how much effort is required to keep control of a game, having rebutted his opponents suspect opening play with some nice tactics, these only proved enough to go into first a middle game with a slight advantage and then an ending where both sides had a rook and several pawns. Everyone knows how difficult these can be to win, but Greg was able to win. Yaqub Saeed dropped an exchange but showed good determination to make things difficult for his opponent and managed to force a perpetual check. Edward Basham was playing 'only' moves for a long period of time, until his opponent tried a long tactical sequence and miscalculated. So having been sandwiched between Gerald Pierce playing a conventional looking Sicilian position and Steven Cox playing the sort of Kings Pawn opening I’d last played at school (and which I believe was one of the reasons snooker player Steve Davies gave up chess) I found myself with the unexpected task of clocking up the decisive point. Gerald’s eventful game eventually ended in a draw – his opponents reluctance to resign vindicated by an unfortunate stalemate, whilst Steven Cox after a tough battle agreed a draw as time and pieces were running out. First match win of the season and every chance of another when we play away to Berkhamsted in a couple of weeks. Final score W&Hz 2 4.5: Gerrards Cross 1 1.5.
Bucks League - 29/10/2014
The third team won away to Gerrards Cross 3. Final score Gerrards Cross 3 2.5: W&Hz 3 3.5.
Bucks League - 27/10/2014
The first rule of match captaincy is probably to ensure you reach the venue yourself. And the second is to have contingency plans. Richard Symonds' debut as captain didn't quite go to plan and so rather than a quiet evening of social chess , I found myself stepping into the first team, as a combination of illness and mechanical failure meant an eventful start to the night.
As for the match itself an evening for the purists - all six games opened with 1 e4 and 4 of them featured the French Defence. Richard Symonds and Alex Bullen seemed to win quite comfortably, whilst Peter Finn and I headed for the path less travelled partly by accident, but with a fair degree of design. It would be unfair to say we head for random positions, but our games involve a calculated element of risk. Guy Moss won a nice endgame, and only John Syner conceded a half point. Next up Bourne End 1 which will probably be somewhat tougher. Final score W&Hz 1 5.5: Gerrards Cross 1 0.5.
Bucks League - 23/10/2014
The third team lost away to Slough. Final score Slough 2 3.5: W&Hz 3 2.5.

Bucks League - 13/10/2014
Following my demotion to the second team, match reports will mostly cover their adventures this season. I'm not sure we will match the exploits of last year - I'm a poor swap for John Syner- but I'm hoping the team finish in the top half.
Monday night saw us draw with Slough, although for much of the evening we stood better. I won the toss again and opted to play white on odds. Whether because the team were scared or just fancied a change of opponents, the Slough captain then switched his boards 3 and 4 around. I agreed to this, and we won pretty easily on both boards. As with last year this fixture came down to the top board with the team ahead 3:2 and Edward Basham playing Matt Dydak. This year the game went against us, so Slough salvaged a draw.
In other news Steve Cox ended his long run without a league win, and Yaqub Saeed extended his record of never losing to anybody from outside the club. Final score W&Hz 2 3: Slough 1 3.

Bucks League - 16/4/2014
The club captain apologises for the lack of a match report on the final fixture at Bourne End. This much hyped event lacked much of the drama that prompts a good report, as the team turned up and turned the opposition over. It would be disrespectful to claim it was never in doubt, and one or two of us got a bit tense as we got closer to the line, but the team of 2013/14 can now join those of 2005/06 and 2010/11 as league winners. Well done to all concerned. Obviously we now re-group and try and retain the title next season, something we have yet to manage as a club.
Bucks League - 31/3/2014
The third team won against Gerrards Cross securing second place in the second division. Final score W&Hz 3 3.5: Gerrards Cross 2 2.5.

The third team lost to Slough. Final score W&Hz 3 2.5: Slough 2 3.5.
Bucks League - 19/3/2014
The second team concluded their season with a narrow defeat away to Gerrards Cross. Although a low key way to finish, the team has done extremely well to finish 3rd. Well done to everybody. Final score Gerrards Cross 1 3.5: W&Hz 2 2.5.
In other news Bourne End 1 scraped past Berkhamsted to set up the Championship decider against the first team on Wednesday 26th March. The tie-breaks mean that a drawn match would be enough for the first team, but some of us have been here before. Good luck to all those playing.
The third team remain well placed to finish second in Division 2. It will probably come down to the final match against their nearest rivals Gerrards Cross on 31st March, so a dramatic finish to the league season is guaranteed.
Bucks League - 17/3/2014

Bucks League - 24/2/2014
In order to win any team competition you need a good squad, and so it was to prove last night. Illness meant one late drop out, and what transpired to be a diary reminder problem meant a second absentee. Happily Yaqub Saeed and then Edward Basham were at the club and proved more than adequate replacements. Not much to say about the match itself as with the previous fixture against Berkhamsted we seemingly made hard work of things before establishing a comfortable winning margin. The captain is starting to feel the strain, having notched up several quick wins early in the season, he has been forced to go the distance in the last two. Then again his choice both of opening and subsequent endgame play did suggest he might have left his braincells in the pub. Next up Slough away - its starting to get serious. Final score W&Hz 1 4.5: Gerrards Cross 1 1.5.
Bucks League - 17/2/2014
The third team drew against Aylesbury. Final score W&Hz 3 3: Aylesbury 1 3.
4NCL - 17/2/2014
Several members of the club took part in the 4 Nations Chess League (4NCL) over the weekend, for a variety of sides. The 4NCL is a team based event played in three divisions over 11 rounds, and was originally conceived to promote opportunities for elite chess. Teams are more loosely defined than in club chess and at the top level include leading Grandmasters from across the globe playing with financial support, whilst in Division 3 there are a more disparate collection of players and playing strengths. This year the fixtures are spread across three venues.
Guy Moss notched up two draws for Barbican Youth, Alex Bullen a win and a loss for Rhyfelwyr Essyllwg, both in Division 2. In Division 3 Richard Symonds secured a pair of draws for the BCM Rhinos, and Mark Couch showed the benefit of Richard's coaching by drawing on 4NCL debut with a 2133 rated player, for BCM Bison. The largest proportion of W&Hz players were meant to be playing in the Bucks Juniors side, but whilst on Saturday many people battled with fallen trees on the road and rail network, health problems left Edward Basham and I unable to reach Daventry. We did make it on the Sunday in good time, but Edward had a relapse shortly before the start of the round. Undeterred the junior members of the team all drew, and ex W&Hz member Phil Makepeace and your ridiculously over-aged correspondent won, both in games that took nearly 4 hours to complete, to win the match.
Bucks League - 12/2/2014
The second team won away to Berkhamsted going a long way to securing their first division place. Final score Berkhamsted 1 2: W&Hz 2 4.

Bucks League
The third team won away to Bourne End 3. Final score Bourne End 3 2: W&Hz 3 4.
Bucks League
A rather routine win for the first team in their last fixture of 2013. Slough's top board doesn't play away games, and the normal second board wasn't playing, so with two weak reserves it wasn't a desperately strong side that turned up. Peter and I seemed to be in a race to win first, only to find Simon had swiftly demolished his opponent. Guy unfortunately missed a tactic, Richard eventually exploited the double pawn weaknesses in his opponents position, whilst Alex pressed his endgame to its limits but had to settle for a draw. It would have been nice to win by a more convincing margin, but it wouldn't change too much league wise. All we need now is to successfully negotiate 4 more matches and then peak on March 26 at Bourne End. I remain optimistic. Final score W&Hz 1 4.5: Slough 1 1.5.
Bucks League
The second team won their first game of the season at home to Berkhamsted. Final score W&Hz 2 3.5: Berkhamsted 1 2.5.
Bucks League
The second team lost away to Bourne End. However, John Syner continued his good early season form with a win against Steve James. Final score Bourne End 1 4.5: W&Hz 2 1.5.
Bucks League
The third team won away to Aylesbury. Final score Aylesbury 1 2.5: W&Hz 3 3.5.
Bucks League
Maybe the fist pump was a little excessive but this result does keep the league in the balance for a few more months. Having decided it would be bonkers to risk the Benko, I unleashed a Blumenfeld which confused my opponent and though not without incident lead to the first win of the evening again. Mind you it was clear early on that this was a heavyweight contest - players trading blows in positions largely unfamiliar and to be honest baffling to to your correspondent. Nothing seemed to be going to plan until Simon's opponent - with material advantage - overlooked a mate in one to see us go 2 up. To complete a family double Peter's opponent then also went astray for the third point. With the time control reached it was far from clear we would get any more points, but happily Richard and his opponent agreed a draw to prompt wild scenes of celebration (well from one person at least). And although Alex had to resign his game after battling hard in a rather messy position, Guy's draw completed a rather satifying evening. The third team also won against Berkhamsted. Final scores W&Hz 1 4: Bourne End 1 2. W&Hz 3 5: Berkhamsted 2 1.
Bucks League
Last spring I misjudged the trains to Gerrards Cross and defaulted a board for the second team. This year I changed mode of transport and was the first to clock up a win [See Dave Brailsford's philosophy of 'marginal gains']. The rest of the match went to plan as well. Simon Finn found the venue and won easily, as did Alex - the first three wins coming with black. Richard delivered mate with a knight, and there were further wins for Guy Moss on his season's debut, and Edward Basham on his return to the club after university. Final score Gerrards Cross 1 0: W&Hz 1 6.

Bucks League
T S Eliot was wrong, for captains of W&Hz first team October is the cruellest month. The optimism of a new campaign yet again being dashed at an outpost of the Bucks League. But there were some positives. John Syner marked his 50th match for the first team with his 30th win (Dr Cox reached 50 games at the end of last year). Alex Bullen won convincingly and with time to construct an elaborate mating net. But it wasn’t enough, an unexplained default followed swiftly by the match captain dropping an entire rook left us 2 down, and although Richard Symonds battled long and hard again to try and win a drawn endgame, his efforts sadly only widened the margin of defeat. Final score Berkhamsted 1 4: W&Hz 1 2.
County Matches
Seven club members travelled over to Basingstoke to represent the county in the Open section of the Chiltern League against Hampshire. The match finished in a thrilling 10:10 draw with Bucks winning the last three boards to finish. A reminder that opportunities exist to play weekend county matches at all standards of play, against Oxon, Berks and Hants. Further details from the Chairman or from Andrew Hill (open team captain).
Bucks League
The Bucks League season started with the first team, runners-up last season, taking on the newly promoted second team. Three players Alex Bullen, Simon Finn and Richard Symonds made their debuts for the first team, Alex and Simon making their first appearances for the club. The close season turnover of players departing to new jobs and universities coupled with the new arrivals meant that the second team also contained a number of strong ex-first team players so a hard match was to be expected. In the end it was perhaps more straightforward than expected - only John Syner, in the all-Welsh clash on top board, notched a point for the second team with a strong attacking game. The club captain continued his edgy, unconvincing but successful form of last year in inflicting Yaqub Saeed's first loss for the club (after 6 wins from 6 last year). The toughest, and longest, game of the night came down to an endgame with club champion Richard Symonds breaking down Ben Donovan's resistance after a lengthy period of probing for weakness. An excellent start for the first team as they look to challenge for the title, but plenty of positives for the second team as they battle to establish themselves in the Division. Final score W&Hz 1 5: W&Hz 2 1.

Bucks League
The third team won against Bourne End in a match affected by no shows owing to traffic problems. Both Andrew Eastwood and Fred Day had to act as late substitutes and Phil Wain defaulted. However, this was very much a side show to the potential title decider between the first team and Bourne End. The result went the wrong way which all but hands the title to Bourne End. Final scores W&Hz 1 2.5: Bourne End 1 3.5. W&Hz 3 4.5: Bourne End 3 1.5.
Bucks League
Congratulations to the second team who have won Division Two with three games to spare. This follows Berkhamsted's loss away to Bourne End.

Bucks League
The second team won against Bourne End to close in on the second division title. The title will be won before the next match against Aylesbury unless Berkhamsted win their next two fixtures. Final score W&Hz 2 5: Bourne End 3 1.
Bucks League
The first team raised their game and convincingly defeated Berkhamsted in exciting fashion to set up what is effectively a winner takes all match against Bourne End 1 next month. The player match up probably suited us, but it still required some winning. Matt Saunders didn't look wholly convincing in the opening on the white side of a Grunfeld, but found some good attacking play and finished with a neat mating net. Steven Cox in a welcome return to form took full advantage of his opponent's migraine and with some complicated and strong tactical play forced his opponent to resign. Gerald Pierce drew solidly having been in control for most of the game. John Syner has found a way to defeat his perennial opponent which works, invite him to sacrifice material, hold on to the material and dodge the tactics until opponent runs out of bits. Sam Walker opted to play a tactical line in the Dragon without castling which just looked like a bluff to me, but produced another win. Stephen Dishman played a line that he had faced with reversed colours, but although it looked a bit messy in the opening and white probably emerged with an edge, in the end the position ran into a drawn endgame. Still we'd have settled for 5:1 at the start. Final score W&Hz 1 5: Berkhamsted 1 1.

Round 3 of the Club Championship was played on 7th January with two games held over until 28th January. The draw for round 4 is below. Matches are due to be played on 25th February.

The second team won at Slough. Final score Slough 2 1: W&Hz 2 5.
Mick Porter
It is with much sadness that I must inform you of the death of Mick Porter following a short illness.
Mick joined the club at the start of the 2004/2005 season. He was an enthusiastic member of a number of our Bucks League sides as well as playing in the Bucks Individual and in county matches.
The funeral will be held at Amersham Crematorium on February 4th at 2:30pm.
Bucks League
The first team overcame the adverse weather conditions but a number of frozen brain cells meant they made hard work of defeating Slough. You can't dismiss points in the bag but it now looks increasingly likely that they will have to beat Bourne End 1 rather than draw to take the title. But there is a tough match against Berkhamsted to come in 2 weeks. Final score W&Hz 1 4: Slough 1 2.
Bucks League
The third team match against Berkhamsted 2 has been postponed owing to the cold weather. The new date for this fixture is 29th April.
Bucks League
Aylesbury have withdrawn their first team from the Bucks League. As a result our first team have fallen behind Bourne End on board points at the top of the first division.
Bucks League
A win for Yaqub Saeed on his Bucks League debut and a draw for William Castaneda accounted for the third team's points in the return fixture against the second team. Final score W&Hz 2 4.5: W&Hz 3 1.5.
Bucks League
The first team travelled to Bourne End to take on their second team. The match featured a welcome return for Sam Walker and a one-off appearance by David Saunders. Final score Bourne End 2 0.5: W&Hz 1 5.5.
Bucks League
The third team travelled to Aylesbury to take on their second team. Early wins for Andrew Eastwood and Malcolm Instone coupled with losses on boards 3 and 4 left the match to be decided by the results on the top two boards. Mick Porter won his end game and David Brown accepted a draw once the time control had been reached. Final score Aylesbury 2 2.5: W&Hz 3 3.5.

Bucks League
The second team won against Bourne End 3. Final score Bourne End 3 1.5: W&Hz 2 4.5.
Bucks League
The first team won against Gerrards Cross. Final score W&Hz 1 4.5: Gerrards Cross 1 1.5.
Bucks League
The first team won at Berkhamsted. Final score Berkhamsted 1 2: W&Hz 1 4.
Bucks League
An early loss on board 6 got the third team's match against Gerrards Cross 2 off to a poor start. However, another impressive win for WIlliam Castaneda coupled with a win for Mick Porter and a draw for Steve Barnes left the home team with an advantage. Unfortunately, promising positions on boards 1 and 3 were not maintained. Final score W&Hz 3 2.5: Gerrards Cross 2 3.5.
Bucks League
The second team won against Slough 2. Final score W&Hz 2 4.5: Slough 2 1.5.
e2e4 High Wycombe Congress
Congratulations to Peter Finn who scored 4.5/5 and finished equal first in the Major Section (under 140/1750). Andrew Hill finished on 3/5 and Yaqub Saeed on 2/4 in the same section. Jonathan Melsom scored 2.5/5 in the Challenger Section (under 175/2050). Guy Moss scored 2.5/5 in the Open Section including a win over FIDE Master Mark Lyell.
Bucks League
The first team slumped to a rather disappointing loss against Slough 1 who are now becoming something of a bogey side. And it was a similar story to last year as well with the team unable to exploit a grading advantage. A good win on top board for Stephen Dishman and draws for Gerald Pierce who was pressing to the end for a win, and for Jonathan Melsom playing once more on the most uncomfortable board in the county (no elbow room) in one of his dullest games for years. But these were cancelled out by a battling loss from Steven Cox, John Syner coming out worse in a tactical maelstrom and Matt Saunders missing a really nasty tactic when better. Not our favourite venue but things can only get better. Final score Slough 1 4: W&Hz 1 2.
Bucks League
The third team travelled to Berkhamsted to take on their second team. Early wins for Steve Barnes and Malcolm Instone and a draw on board 6 left the match to be decided by the results on the top two boards. William Castaneda won his end game from a rook against rook and knight down to seal the victory. Final score Berkhamsted 2 2.5: W&Hz 3 3.5.
Bucks League
The competitive season got under way with the second division match between the club's second and third teams; the third team making a welcome return to the Bucks League. The match brought together a mix of long-standing club members and two players Richard Symonds and Greg Edmonds making their club debut. Both won in good style for the second team, as did Andrew Hill making a welcome return to the side. It was a hard fought match, the second team being held to draws on boards 2 and 6 and Steve Barnes (a virtual debutant having only appeared as a filler last year) notching up a win for the third team. Final score W&Hz 3 2: W&Hz 2 4.
Club Championship
Here is Jonathan's annotation of his match against Guy in the final round of the Club Championship.
[The last round of the club championship and the strongest player in the event is white and half a point ahead. Black has nothing to lose. ]
1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Nf3 Nh6 [A fairly modern idea which I had used previously. The knight goes to the rim of the board, from where it can go to f5 if play follows traditional lines, but as in this game can also go to f7. Although modern the on-line chessbase database includes 760 games from this position, Guy's response being one of the most popular. ]
6.Bd3 f6 7.0–0 Nf7 8.Re1 fxe5 9.Nxe5 Ncxe5 10.dxe5 Qc7 11.f4 [The first new move of the game - white strengthens the centre and gains space on the king-side. The king will find safety on h1, and white's attack will gain momentum.]
11...c4 12.Bc2 Bc5+ 13.Kh1 Bd7 14.Nd2 0–0–0 [Time to castle, difficult to assess which side was correct, but white's pieces did seem to be facing towards the king-side. ]
15.Nf3 g6 16.Nd4 Rdg8 17.b4 Bxd4 18.Qxd4 [White has made swift progress on the queen-side, with blacks attack still on the starting blocks. ]
18...b6 19.Be3 Nh6 20.a4 Kb8 21.Reb1 Nf5 22.Bxf5 gxf5 [Black is holding on but in truth is treading water waiting for the pawns to roll against his king and open the position up decisively. However the now open g-file offers a glimmer of hope as Whites own king is looking lonely.]
23.b5 Bc8 24.a5 Rg7 25.axb6 axb6 26.Qd1 [A visually pleasing move but probably not the strongest. The queen retreats with the idea of moving to a4 with the mating attack down the a file. However, black gets his bishop onto a useful diagonal and the scope for a swindle starts to increase.]
26...Bb7 27.Bd4 Rhg8 28.Rb2 Kc8 29.Qg1 Rg4 30.Bxb6 Qd7 31.Qc5+ [This should be mate in 9, but chess is rarely that simple in the heat of competition..]
31...Kb8 32.Ba7+ Ka8 33.Qb4 d4! 34.Bc5+ Kb8 35.Bd6+ Kc8 36.Qc5+? Kd8 [The threat to g2 means Fritz gives this as level, but white plays on...]
37.Rba2 Ke8! 38.Ra8+ Kf7 [This king walk to safety after so long under the cosh was exciting to find but nerves were getting shredded with each new tactical idea. ]
39.Rxg8 Bxg2+ 40.Kg1 Kxg8 41.Ra7 [A perfectly natural move but the final decisive mistake ]
41...Bb7+ 42.Kf1 Rxf4+ 43.Ke1 Qg7 [The queen which has been spending the whole game defending finally joins the attack to set up mating threats. All that remains is for black to avoid any perpetual check ideas and the game and the championship title are his. ]
44.Ra8+ Bxa8 45.Qc8+ Kf7 46.Qd7+ Kg6 47.Qe8+ Qf7 48.Qxa8 Re4+ 49.Kd2 Kh5 50.Qa1 d3 51.Qf1 Qa7 52.Qf3+ Kg6 53.Qg3+ Rg4 54.Qf3 Qa2+ 55.Ke3 Re4+
