RULES
(See also Advice to Exhibitors)
1. The Competition is open to any amateur exhibitor.
2. No person who is employed in a nursery, market or private garden or who is a resident member of a house where a nursery or market garden business is carried out is eligible to compete. The occasional sale of surplus produce shall not disqualify.
3. All entries to the Show must be the produce of the exhibitor's garden or allotment. Division 5 classes 29, 30, 31, 32 are excluded. Exhibitors may, if they wish, name the variety of their entry.
4. Entry forms will be accepted between :
6.30 pm and 8.30 pm on Friday 1st September 2023
8.30 am and 10 am on Saturday 2nd September 2023
LATE ENTRIES (after 10 am on the day of the show) will only be accepted at DOUBLE THE ENTRY FEE.
5. Exhibits may be staged between 6.30 pm and 8.30 pm (or when the tables are ready) on Friday 1st September 2023 and between 8.30 am and 10.15 am on the day of the Show.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL STAGING BE ALLOWED AFTER 10.30 AM.
6. All vegetable roots must be washed.
Classes 62, 63, 64, 65 and 66, MUST be covered with transparent film.
7. The exact number of each variety as stated in this Schedule or the Agreed List must be shown. If incorrect, the entry may be disqualified.
8. No professional assistance will be permitted in staging exhibits.
9. Exhibitors should, where necessary, provide their own vases, bowls or trays, in accordance with the Schedule. (NB. A small supply of vases will be available at the Hall.)
10. The Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry.
11. All entries accepted on the understanding that the Committee reserve the right to inspect any exhibitor’s garden or allotment before or after the Show.
12. No exhibit may be removed before 4 pm. Exhibits remaining after 4.15 pm and not marked 'RESERVED' will be sold - proceeds will be put towards the Association Show Funds.
13. Prize money should be collected from the Hon. Treasurer before 4.00 pm. Prize winners who do not collect their prize money at the appropriate time must make their own arrangements to collect this from the Hon. Treasurer before the last day of September 2023. All prize money not claimed by 30th September 2023 will be transferred to the Association Show funds.
14. Any protest in connection with the Show must be lodged with the Show Manager not later than 3 pm on the day of the show. A deposit of 25p must be paid at the time of the protest. This will be refunded if, after investigation by the Committee, the complaint is upheld.
15. All exhibits and personal property etc. shall be entered at the risk of the exhibitor. Hullbridge Gardens Association shall not be liable for compensation due to loss or damage for any cause whatsoever.
16. Classes 28, 48 and 53 can be split into sub-classes if there are sufficient entries of one group at the discretion of the Show Manager.
17. Under no circumstances may staged exhibits be moved without prior consent of the Show Manager.

66. Cider Cake
Ingredients : 8oz. dried mixed fruit; 4 tablespoons sweet cider; 6oz. butter, softened; 6oz. brown sugar; 3 beaten eggs; 8oz. Self Raising Flour; 1 Teaspoon ground mixed spice(optional).
Method : Put the dried fruit into a bowl with the cider & leave to soak overnight (to improve cake flavour!). Next day, grease & line a 175mm (7") square cake tin. Cream butter & sugar in a bowl until light & fluffy. Beat in eggs a little at a time & then mix in dried fruit & cider. Fold in flour & spice and mix thoroughly. Put in tin & bake for 1hr 10mins in oven @ 180oC/350oF (Gas Mark 4) or until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Leave to cool in tin for 5+mins & then turn out onto a wire rack.

ADVICE TO EXHIBITORS
1. Onions should have loose skin removed, roots trimmed, neck firm and fully matured skin, with neck tied/whipped using uncoloured raffia or string.
2. Marrow’s 30cms to 38cms (12 to 15 inches) long.
3. Leeks washed, roots trimmed, tops left on.
4. Beetroot about the size of tennis balls.
5. Potatoes should be about 170gms (6 oz.) in weight
6. Roses should be just opening.
7. It will facilitate judging if varieties of fruit are named.
8. Remember the season will be taken into account.
9. The natural bloom of fruit should be preserved.
10. The stalks to be left on all fruit.
11. Fruit except Apples & Pears must be shown ripe.
12. Tomatoes should be ripe and ready for the table with calyces left on.
13 No limit on number of exhibits per class per exhibitor.
14. Fill in your entry form and bring it to the hall so that we can issue you with an exhibitor's number and a card for each class in which you are entering. The entry card shows your name on one side and your exhibitor’s number and class number on the reverse. The entry card and your exhibit should be placed in the area set out for that class. Please ensure that the card is with your exhibit and that the side with your name on is placed face down.
15. The judges make their assessment without ever knowing who the exhibitor is.
16 After judging, the card is turned over and where appropriate the prize sticker/stamp attached. All is then ready for the opening to the public who can then see who are the winners.
17 If you want to take your exhibit away at the end of the show you may do so after 4pm. To ensure mistakes are not made you should ensure that your entry card is marked RESERVED on the side with your name on it. Entries not marked RESERVED will be put up for auction at the end of the show. ('RESERVED' stamps are available for exhibitors use.)
18. The Treasurer sits to the left of the stage, as you look at it, ready to pay your winnings. If you do not collect your prize money then we treat it as a donation to the next Show.
