After days of constant rain who would have believed the rain would stop and for the sun to come out on this special day, to the relief of all those who had spent weeks organising the event.
It was well attended by 50-60 people, residents, friends and representatives from other organisations. The event was opened by Philip Thackray, chairperson of the "Friends of Chapel Street Cemetery" who thanked everyone for coming. He introduced Simon Hardy one of the volunteers who gave a short but very interesting talk on The Past, The Present and The Future of the cemetery. Our special guest was the Rev Jamie Kissack, moderator of the Yorkshire Synod of the United Reform Church, who gave a short speech followed by the 'Blessing' of the cemetery. Lincoln Oakley from C.A.B.A.D, who has been a great help to the "Friends" was asked to unveil a sundial on their behalf to mark the 200th anniversary. It ended with Shirley Holdsworth reciting a few lines from a poem 'The Cemetery' by Lyn Paul. Afterwards refreshments were served, whilst some of the visitors ventured off on a Heritage Trail around the cemetery. In all it was a very successful event, many visitors not knowing what to expect were astonished at the amount of work the "Friends" had achieved in such a short time.
The "Friends" would like to say a big thank all to all those who attended, gave donations and continue to give their support.
