Why Fairfield Matters: A Vision for Public Space
Fairfield Recreation Ground is more than just open space—it’s a vital part of the local community.
- A shared space for recreation, relaxation, and connection
- An important green asset in an urban environment
- A place with local history and identity
- A resource for future generations
We believe access to quality green space should be protected and strengthened for everyone.
History
Here is why this historic site is a vital part of our landscape:
- A Hard-Won Legacy: While is has long been in existence, Fairfield only exists today because of the passion of John Williams Mayor fought years of opposition, eventually using his own funds to secure its future.
- A Public Right: Created during a period of intense urban growth, Fairfield was founded on the radical idea that free access to green space is essential for everyone, not just a privileged few.
- An Urban Haven: It serves as a historic ‘green lung,’ preserving open air and natural beauty amidst the contrast of urban development
The Friends Park Movement
Friends of Fairfield is part of a wider UK network of over 7,000 community-led “Friends of Parks” groups. These groups play an important role in supporting local green spaces, helping to improve parks, strengthen communities, and ensure these places are protected for the future.
These community-led groups protect local heritage, improve facilities, and host events that foster a strong sense of neighbourhood connection.
Their collective efforts are represented and championed by the National Federation of Parks and Green Spaces.
