Churches are designed for large communal gatherings rather than daily commercial usage, which can lead
to significant issues when remodelling internal spaces. We have therefore commissioned an Architect
and Surveyor to assess our requirements. Detailed drawings have been produced to
maximise space for a variety of uses while preserving the architectural integrity of this Listed
Building. Requirements also include renewing electrical and heating systems, installing a kitchen
and toilets, while meeting accessibility needs. Fortunately the building has been well maintained over the years
and there are no major structural changes required except for some minor fabric remedial works.
We require change of use Planning and Listed Building Consents, compliance with current
Building Standards and food hygiene regulations for public catering.
Elie Kirk has been fully surveyed and building repairs and restoration works have been
factored into the overall project costs. Essential repairs and fitting out to make the building functional as a community resource will form part of the initial phase, while future phases will allow further development to take place as needed, including allowing the clock to be functional once again.
Relatives will retain the right of access to visit all the graves. Fife Council has always been
responsible for its upkeep and will continue to do so including all pathways around the Kirk.
We will respect the emotional and historical significance of the building with many of its
historic features being retained.
We have listened to the community and plan to focus on local needs not currently catered for. We will also partner with other local community organisations and services further afield.
We will reimagine the building by making it welcoming to all and will host Elie & Earlsferry Historical
Society with access to their archive collection.
We will participate in community events, creating a warm space in the heart of the village to allow the community to meet and take part in activities.
The Kirk building will continue to be available for wedding ceremonies and other family gatherings.
We will create a separate space in the north gallery with its own access for a local small business to occupy.
We will provide opportunities for local artists and craftspeople to showcase and sell their work.
We have completed the feasibility study and evaluated the essential work required and are
now in the process of applying for community grants, local authority funding and fund raising activities. We will shortly be inviting members of our community to become a shareholder of Elie Kirk Community Enterprise, with share options being available over the next 6 months.
