EKCEL is a Community Benefit Society established in 2025 with the aim of keeping Elie’s historic village church in its place at the heart of the community. We hope to create a new role for the building as a community hub, following its disposal by the Church of Scotland.
What is a Community Benefit Society (CBS)?
Elie Kirk Community Enterprise Limited has been set up as a Community Benefit Society (CBS) but what is this?
A CBS is a legal form of organisation that is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. They are a type of co-operative that are set up to operate on a not for profit basis for purposes that benefit the broader interests of the community. Any profits are reinvested into the business or some other activity for the common good of the community.
A CBS is made up of members who hold community shares which give local people a stake in the organisation and its success. To ensure a CBS runs fairly each member has one vote regardless of how many shares they own in the CBS.
