Downham Mutual Aid was set up in 2020 as an emergency response to the Covid 19 pandemic lock down. Since September 2023 Downham Aid now exists as an unincorporated association to mainly provide food support to the Downham and surrounding communities in the form of a social supermarket, in partnership with Brook Lane Community Church called the Gleaning Pantry.
The charitable purposes of Downham Aid are:
- The prevention and relief of poverty by running a social supermarket called The Gleaning Pantry in Downham for the residents of Downham, and other areas within Bromley and Lewisham Boroughs, who are on means tested benefits or low incomes.
- The relief of those in need, by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage in the Bromley and Lewisham Boroughs by way of providing additional support and services.
