Hi DUGs,

Road works

Road closures on the A84 at Doune may affect some members this week.
The road will be closed for re-surfacing on Tuesday and Wednesday, from 19.00 - 05.00 with hourly amnesties.

This will mean there will be no access to the village from the A84.
If you are coming in from the motorway or the A9, you will not be affected.
Anyone coming in from Deanston, Callander, or even the Wood of Doune, will need to find an alternative.

Please check your route before travelling.

Workshop

Sarah
Wednesday, 2nd July will see Sarah's return.

After Colin requested that, maybe we should have some songs from this millennium, Kathleen suggested Amy Macdonald's This is the Life. This is a great song for beginners, but Sarah assures me it can be adapted nicely for more experienced players too.

Sarah has also suggested Lady Gaga's Bad Romance. Those of us who attended BraveUke will have heard Sarah perform this with her Southside Strummers, as well as joining with her in the Big Strum. The song packs a lot of punch and is a real crowd pleaser.

Any of us oldies who may not be familiar with the songs may like to give them a listen before the workshop:

Andy Thompson - BraveUke

Last Wednesday, Andy Thompson, the organiser of the BraveUke Festival in Dunblane, popped in to thank DUGs for their support and keep us up to date with next year's festival. Tickets will be going on sale in the autumn.

Cajon

The cajon we have been using for the past few months was kindly loaned to the group by John Gallacher.
Now that we have seen how the cajon enhances so many of our songs, I thought it was high time we got our own.

So, I popped into Joanie's Music Shop in Stirling last week to ask Jim about purchasing one.
Jim showed me one that was sitting in front of the till in the shop (just being used as a surface to hold some leaflets). He asked if that was the kind of thing we wanted?
When I said, yes, he said I could take it. He has kindly donated it the group.

Just a reminder that if you are buying anything from Joanie's, if you tell them you are a Doune Ukulele Group member, you will get a 10% discount on most items.
We are so lucky to have such supportive music shop nearby.

Welcome to Joanie’s Music, Stirling’s friendly, local guitar shop! Opening it’s doors in 2020, Joanie’s Music has a simple goal, to give a much needed new home to the amazing local music scene of Central Scotland. Whether that takes the shape of a new guitar, spare set of strings or sticks, events, tuition, repairs or

Library

I will be running another three-week block of beginners' lessons at Doune Library on Saturday mornings, 28th June, 5th and 12th July.
The lessons are free and are aimed at complete beginners. If you know anyone who may be interested, let me know. Or you can book directly with Alison at the Library.

Christmas

We have had our first booking for Christmas! 🎅
The Doune Dementia Group have asked us back to do their Christmas Party on 4th of December (accompanied by Ukulele Santa!).
This means, of course, that we will need to start practicing Christmas songs right away! (Just kidding, we'll leave it till the end of the month! 😄 )

Playlist

Our four newest songs all still need a bit of work, so we will start by taking another look at them.

I've not had anyone volunteer to put a playlist together yet (come on folks!)
So, I'm keeping it short this week, to allow us to choose on the night, rather than just have all my favourites... again!

Can't Buy Me Love
House of the Rising Sun
Lyin' Eyes
Hotel California

Note: The song sheets for these latest songs may not be on the website yet.
Once we are happy with how we play them, I will put them up.

If you want to practice any of our other songs, you can view/download all our songs here: Our Songs

Thank You

I'd like to thank members for their kind messages of condolence.
My Mum passed away Monday, last week, so it has been a difficult time for Jackie and myself.
Your support and kind thoughts have helped us through things.
