Welcome!

Established in 1936, Carlisle and District Model Engineering Society is a small group of enthusiastic model engineers who operate a fantastic little railway around the island in Hammonds Pond in Upperby Park, Carlisle. The focus is on building and running model steam and electric locomotives on our combined 3½", 5" and 7¼" gauge raised track. We are open to the public on Sundays between April and October (weather and staff permitting), between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Come along and say hello and take a ride behind one of our locomotives!

The Society is looking for new members to help with the running of the miniature railway at Hammonds Pond. Please note ALL are welcome and you DO NOT need to be a model engineer to join us (although model engineers are very welcome!). If you have any interest in trains or would just like to help us keep the miniature railway running for the visitors to the park, come along and join us! We meet socially every Thursday at Hammonds Pond for a chat and a cup of tea and carry out any essential maintenance tasks and on Sundays from April to October, when we run the railway for the public.  Membership costs just £25 per year and you have the opportunity to learn to drive one of our electric locomotives!

Latest news from Hammonds Pond

We have recently been carrying out essential maintenance of the track at Hammonds Pond. The track was originally constructed around 1946, so almost 80 years ago and has served us very well. However, time and the elements have taken their toll in that time and a number of the support columns are past their best. We have now embarked on a programme to replace those that are worse affected and, to date we have replaced 5 of the old columns with new concrete ones, kindly provided by GRAHAM HOWE FENCING LTD. of Carlisle!
