CDAS visit to St Mary's Church, Yatton Thursday 1st June 2023.
A group of members of CDAS visited Yatton to see it's magnificent church. The visit was arranged by Mike and Margaret Cooke , members of our society.
The tour was led by Mary who was born and bred in Yatton, with all her lifetime events taking place in the church.
It is called the Cathedral of the Moors due to it's size and grandeur in relation to the size of the village. It has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade 1 listed building.
Mary began at the church gate, showing the group the origins of the village green in that old part of the village. She described the origins of the building from Saxon times and then passing through one of the oldest porches in Somerset, the group went inside. Once there the group learnt about the additions to the church, the organ, the tombs, the bells and altar to name but few.
The group collected a £48 donation for the church.
