To Wemyss Bay ferry (to Rothesay)
By Car:
From Glasgow & Inverclyde: take M8 West - follow signs for Gourock / Greenock. Join A78 to Wemyss Bay via Inverkip. (approx 55-60 minutes from Glasgow)
From Ayrshire: A71, A76, A77 - merge to M8 as above, or to A78 coast road to Wemyss Bay, via Largs. Or alternative A737 via Dalry.
From M6, M74, M80 or M9 - merge to M8 route above.
PARKING ON BUTE:
Bute has an excellent road coverage and many viewpoints are located around the island.
Rothesay has several car parks with a very low parking fee. Street parking is free, but please avoid parking outside someones front door, and park curteously and legally.
By Rail: (buy your tickets on the SCOTRAIL website or app in advance or at a station)
Direct from Glasgow Central (Scotrail) to Wemyss Bay Station & Ferry port (via Paisley, Port Glasgow & Inverkip) (58 mins from Glasgow) BOOK YOUR TICKET ALL THE WAY TO ROTHESAY
From Ayrshire - Scotrail trains to Largs then transfer to McGills 901 or 906 bus)
PLEASE NOTE: When purchasing your tickets to Wemyss Bay by rail, if you make Rothesay your destination, your Scotrail tickets will include your passenger ferry crossing too - and work out cheaper.
By Bus:
901 (McGills Clydeflyer) Glasgow Waterloo or Bothwell Street to Wemyss Bay - 90 minutes. (via Braehead shopping Centre, Gourock, Greenock) This bus also heads from Largs in Ayrshire to Wemyss Bay.
906 & 906X (as above but via Branchton & Greenock only) Express bus 70 - 80 minutes.
From South & North Ayrshire: Stagecoach 585 from Ayr or Ardrossan to Largs then McGills 901 or 906 as above.
From East Ayrshire: Stagecoach X76 fr0m Kilmarnock to Glasgow then Scotrail train to Wemyss Bay

From Argyll: Take A83 or A8003 to join A886 to Colintraive village for CalMac ferry to Rhubodach
From Glasgow: M8 West - long, scenic route (approx 2 hours) to short sailing (5 minutes) - take Erskine Bridge turn off; take left lane A82 follow via Luss to Tarbet; Take A83 to Strachur; Take A886 via Garvie to Colintraive village for CalMac ferry to Rhubodach
By Bus:
In Argyll & The Cowal Peninsula the 478 bus (West Coast Motors) travels from Dunoon (there is also a ferry terminal in Dunoon from Gourock on the mainland, Invderclyde)

Wemyss Bay to Rothesay (Calmac) - hourly sailings - duration 35 minutes.
check time table online prior to sailings and be aware of any route issues in operation at the time of sailing. Arrive up to an hour before you intend to sail if travelling with a vehicle- 40 minutes minimum recommended as sailings will be extremely busy). Queing is 1st come, 1st on - no pre-booking for particular ferry currently.
