Saint-Gobain UK is planning to build 520 new houses on land near Middlebeck Way (south of Balderton and west of Fernwood). The proposed site is near Lowfield Lane and Staple Lane, Balderton. The project is currently in the pre-application phase. Heaton Planning Ltd Derby, acting on behalf of Saint-Gobain UK, boasts that it “provides positive outcomes on planning applications”.
Many residents of Fernwood and Balderton are already firmly against this proposed development, but will our District Council listen? After ignoring huge local opposition and pushing through the devastating development of Lowfield Lane by exerting immense pressure on councillors, NSDC is determined to continue its environmental vandalism and dump on Balderton yet again, further affecting the well-being of residents.
The existing developments at Middlebeck, Fernwood and Land East of Newark are only partially built. When complete, these three schemes alone – already approved in outline or in detail – will add more than 20,000 new residents to the area immediately surrounding Balderton. The majority of these new houses have yet to be built. The full impact on local infrastructure, open space and the natural environment has not yet been felt but the effect of the existing overdevelopment of Balderton is already extremely severe: congested roads, deteriorating air-quality, severe flooding risks, schools & health services, sewage & drainage systems all under immense strain. This represents a dangerous and unsustainable situation for local communities and their environment.
