The purpose of this section is to provide a timescale by which the other sections may be kept in order. The list starts with Alfred the Great, an Anglo-Saxon king of Wessex who resisted the depradations of the Danish invasion, fought and gradually brought a large part of the country under his control. This resistance was continued by his descendants until the Danish invaders were finally defeated and submitted to one ruler, to be described as -
"The King of England".
