Wrangle.
Wrangle is a parish near the sea-shore, in the Southern division of the County, parts of Holland, in Skirbeck wapentake, Boston union, and county court district, rural deanery of Holland diocese and arch-deaconry and diocese of Lincoln, 9 miles North-north-east from Boston, 4 miles from the East Lincolnshire railway at Leake & Wrangle station and 117 miles from London.
The church of St. Mary and St. Nicholas, is a handsome stone building in the Norman style with nave, chancel, square tower and 6 bells. In the chancel are the recumbent effigies of Sir John and Lady Reid. In the nave is an elaborately carved pulpit of the Elizabethan period, a handsome organ in the front gallery, under which is is a neat stone font bearing the date 1724. There are several handsome tablets to the Bailey and Wright families.
The register dates from 1653.
The living is a vicarage, annual value £868, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Wright and held by Reverend F. W. Wright M.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford.
There are in the parish two small chapels, one belonging to the Wesleyans and one to the Primitive Methodists.
The Rev. Thomas Allenson bequeathed land now producing £148 10s, per annum, one moety of which is applied for teaching poor children, and the other for the maintenance of 5 poor people.
A neat school has recently been erected in the Low Grounds by the vicar. There are charities of about £50 annual value.
Messrs. Swain, Chapman, Lilley, Taylor Pearson, Balderson and Greenfield are the chief landowners. The soil is a rich loam; sub-soil clay. The chief crops are corn, potatoes, mangold wortzel and turnips. The area is 6890 acres of land and 2800 acres of water. The population in1861 was 1198.
