On This Day in Wembury

17 December 1906 — Death of Mrs Calmady

The Exeter and Plymouth Gazette reported the death of Mrs Calmady, widow of Vincent Pollexfen Calmady of Langdon House, Wembury, who had been Master of the Tetcott Hunt. She passed away in the early hours at 34 Brook Street, Grosvenor Square, London, after a short illness.

Born the only daughter of E. C. Sheldon, M.P., of Brailes, Warwickshire, she was first married to Colonel Frederick Granville of Ivybridge, and later to Vincent Calmady. Following her death, she was interred in Wembury churchyard, alongside her second husband.

The Calmady family had long associations with Langdon and Wembury parish, their name appearing in local records for centuries. Mrs Calmady’s burial at St Werburgh’s closed another chapter in the history of one of the area’s most prominent landed families.
