On This Day in Wembury — March 14, 1850

An eye for the shoreline and a flair for sales were already at work along the Yealm.
In the Western Courier of 14 March 1850, a notice invited gentlemen and builders who wished to create marine villas beside the navigable River Yealm, described as a safe and secure harbour for yachts.
Plots of one to two acres were offered on reasonable terms with views said to be unsurpassed and only an hour’s ride from the first naval port in the world.
Enquiries were to be made to Mr Lockyer of Wembury near Plymouth.
Even in 1850, Wembury was being promoted as a place where beauty met opportunity.
