News from the allotments August 2024

Hello fellow gardeners. Here is our latest information update!

Our site

The Wembury Allotment site is unusual compared to some in that it is bisected by a public footpath. Footpath 25 leads up from the direction of Wembury Stores and passes right through our site. To our North it cuts across Knighton field, where currently a crop of barley is growing on one side of the path and a wildflower area has been sown on the other. Although the existence of this path does pose certain security issues it allows members of the public to appreciate the effort that plot holders have made on their plots and has led to many interesting conversations and exchanges. The footpath from the recreation ground to the South of our site is a National Trust permissive path.

Communal Tools

Thanks to the generosity of previous tenants, we have a selection of tools and a couple of wheelbarrows, which ”live” in our communal shed. These are available to all our tenants (on condition they return them after use!) and have proved useful where people have taken on an allotment with no previous experience or few tools. This is another example of the community spirit we seek to grow along with our plants!

Summer

The recent combination of sunshine and copious amounts of rain has certainly helped promote growth and, at time of writing in early July, there is still time to plant Swiss Chard and fine beans for cropping this summer. It is always worth having a go!
