At the heart of the Loraine Estate Community Centre garden is James Smith—an inspiring volunteer whose dedication has transformed a small green space into a place of connection, learning, and pride for residents of all ages.
James’s work goes far beyond planting and pruning. Through his consistent presence and passion for gardening, he has created an environment where neighbours naturally come together. Young people learn how food and flowers grow from the soil, while older residents find a welcoming space to share stories, skills, and quiet moments in nature. The garden has become a living classroom and a social hub, shaped by James’ belief that everyone has something to contribute.
The results of his efforts have not gone unnoticed. James was recently awarded Silver Gilt at the Islington in Bloom Awards 2025 for Best Estate, recognising the Loraine Estate garden as an outstanding example of community-led greening. The award reflects not only the beauty of the space—with its herbs, vegetables, and flowers—but also the strong sense of ownership and care that residents feel toward it.
James runs free gardening sessions every Wednesday from 10 am, and on Sundays, depending on the weather. These open sessions welcome anyone who wants to get their hands in the soil, learn about planting and herbs, or simply enjoy being part of a positive community activity. From rosemary and sage to beans, courgettes, and flowers, participants gain practical skills while building friendships across generations.
Gardening also plays a powerful role in supporting mental health. Time spent outdoors, working with plants, and sharing space with others can reduce stress, improve mood, and provide a sense of purpose and routine. Many residents describe the garden as a place of calm and restoration—a green refuge from the pace of everyday life.
If you would like to get involved, volunteer, or find out more about the gardening sessions, please get in touch with us at the Loraine Estate Community Centre. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or a complete beginner, James and the community would be delighted to welcome you.
Together, the Loraine Estate garden continues to grow—not just in plants and flowers, but in connection, wellbeing, and neighbourhood spirit.
