Terlings Park has a rich history which can be traced back to the 1500s.  The timeline below gives an idea of all the owners and how long they were here for.

Date Owned by Key changes
c1500-1547 Terlings Family
1547-1678 Howe Family
1678-1847 Turvin/Hankin Family

c1711 - a brick built house is recorded - marking the change from farming land

1760ish  - a new millstream was created following the creation of the Stort Navigation

1800 - the millstream appears to be out of use

1825-1839 - significant landscaping is undertaken at Terlings Park changing the entrance location, making the millstream in to a garden feature and building two lodges - these changes are evident on the 1839 Tithe Map.

1847-1859 Madame Caradori Madame Caradori was an operatic diva who toured the world.  She had a rose named after her by Samuel Feast who was a famed American Rose Grower.  The 1851 census shows a huge number of people on site at Terlings including gardeners.
1860-1864 Kerr Family We know that the Kerr family were only here for a short period of time but the grounds remained important to them and they bought their gardener with them from Scotland.
1864-1880 Duke-Hill Family The Duke-Hills were aspiratioal - they knocked down the existing house and rebuilt it on higher ground.  We do not believe that they made substantial changes to the grounds however.
1880-1920 Johnston Family
1922-1948 Bowlby Hil Family The Bowlby's bought Terlings Park but continued to live in the "big house" - Gilston Park - but they definitely partied at Terlings holding a coming of age party for Arthur here for 300 people!
1928 - Kirkpatrick Family Rent from the Bowlby's
1929-1948 - Mrs Calverley Also Rented from the Bowlby's and moved here from Down Hall after her husband Horrace passed away in 1929.  She drove a motor car before WW1 and was made an OBE for her services to nursing in WW1.  She remained committed to District Nursing fo the remainder of her life - holding open gardens here every year includingt the year she died.
1948-1968 Harlow Development Corporation HDC were supposed to move to Mark Hall but it burned down.  Much to the annoyance of staff they had to move to Terlings Park instead...however they soon fell in love with it playing games on the lawns and swimming in the river.
1968-1981 Post Office During the ownership of the Post Office there was a fire in the house and it had to be demolished.
1981-2015 Merck Sharpe and Dohme MSD acquired the site in the early 80s and their staff loved working here.  They were passionate about its heriage and the grounds and looked after what was left when they moved in (albeit some features were removed to build their facilities before staff arrived)
2015 onwards Terlings Park Management Company
